The RDM is reliving the original experience of going through the games via his children, and it's super fun so far.
You totally can get by with whips over rods in regular FFIV. By endgame Rydia is a nukemonster no matter what.
It's a shame you can't keep Yang around, though. Two handed with super high attack power is way better than stupid Edge.
In hardtype (probably also in easytype, though it doesn't matter as much), equipping a whip vs. equipping the best rod is a difference of something like ~6000 vs. ~9000 damage with Bahamut. The small benefit of being able to do somewhat damage and inflict paralysis with physical attacks isn't worth it.
If you save up weapons, Edge can do his share of damage by getting a few 9999 hits on Zeromus, but he's always the first to KO (sorry, swoon), because his HP is lower than Rosa's and he doesn't have high magic defense like the casters. Yang may not have terribly good defense either, but he's got very high HP and very high damage from regular physical attacks.
By the way, anyone play Secret of Evermore? I've heard it's not so good, but I thought it looked cool when I was a kid. Almost bought it instead of Chrono Trigger, but fortunately I made the morally correct choice there.
I liked Secret of Evermore almost as much as Mana. Unsure if it's just because we were lacking in good RPG releases here. The SGUK entrance exam used to include having to list all of the different dogs in SoE

I played 4 on the SNES about a bajillion times. I used to farm Pink Puffs for funsies (never got a clock though - probably don't exist in the NA version!).
It was bizarre which games Square chose to release and which they didn't. Lasted right until the end of the PlayStation 1 generation (where they didn't bother with games like Xenogears and FFT but gave us Ehrgeiz and SaGa Frontier 2).
They probably thought we were too dumb to enjoy a good RPG.
That being said, I remember trying to convince other teens to play FFVII when it was released, and many idiots thought it was boring, and would rather play Tekken instead. So I guess Square knew what they were doing, and they simply weren't that interested in niche gamers, back in the days when they couldn't rely on internet advertising to sell their games.
The thing that really confused me was the fact that CT never got released back then. Akira Toriyama being super popular all over Southern Europe, they could have sold the game just by making his name stand out on the packaging.
Yang's HP actually tops out at a pretty low level. Then his attack stat goes nuts. He's dropping double 9999s in random encounters long before anyone else even hits the damage cap (the RDM did a playthrough with a level up every fight Game Genie code way back in the day. Edward never gets better.)
The RDM has been right: 263,194,431,295,771,222,402,819,021,768 times.

I remember a guy in a shop telling a kid to buy Bloody Roar instead of FF7 because the fighting is better. People just didn't understand the genre.

Ehrgeiz is one of the best button mashers in history. It makes you feel super good about yourself no matter how little skill you have.
Do you still have a working SNES, Fei? Actually, I think my SNES may still work, but it's either at my parents' house somewhere or one of my siblings has it. I haven't played it in years so can't confirm whether it works or not for sure.
My SoM cartridge is not NTSC but even better, it's in French.
No idea where it might be though, I don't know if it's at my parents or if my sister took it at some point.
Well, you might want to check the App Store version then. I don't know about the version available in Canada, but the one sold on the French App Store is multilingual, the game is even available in Chinese.
Damien wrote:FWIW I have too many good new games to play to be replaying ins ones that I've already played to death.
This is probably true for me too. I have a backlog so steep I'll never get through it. Although some of those games aren't that good, so it doesn't matter as much.
I've slowed down on my game purchasing recently, though I do still get a bunch of games to stream on Talking Real that I only get about 2 or 3 hours in to. Got other stuff like Disgaea 5 and Dragon Quest Heroes still sealed.
I'm done with Disgaea games. I've never been a huge fan of their gmmicky style of strategy to begin with and I still have yet to get through both Disgaea 3 and D2. I'll hopefully go back to those and finish them, but after that I'm done with the series and tired of NIS altogether too.
The newest game the RDM has played is Batman: Arkham Asylum. Maybe someday he'll try to catch the highlights of some of the newer generation games...but it's going to be a bit. Maybe if he sells a million books and retires in his thirties.

EDIT: Just Googled, apparently it isn't at all. Is there something to it that makes you replay it a lot then? I haven't played Undertale, but those I know that have seemed to have been playing for ages.
I wouldn't be surprised if it does different things upon replaying. For instance, near the start of the game you battle someone who has been kind to you, but you can finish the battle without killing her. I did kill her the first time and I felt bad so I restarted the game and did that part without killing her. But then a bad guy in the game mocked me and said he knew what I'd done, that I'd actually killed her before.

It's like in animal crossing when Mr Resetti turns up.

They nerfed Resetti in New Leaf. He doesn't show up and yell at you unless you specifically pay a whole bunch of bells to enlist his services.
