Genso Suikoden Rhapsodia (Tactics)

Post by HKK »

A tactical Suikoden rpg was patented the other month by Konami in North America, rumors started surfacing suggesting that Suikoden Tactics would make its way to E3. It didn't. BUt now, ever so randomly, we have pics of Suikoden Rhapsodia, a strategy rpg, in the new Shonen Jump.

Image

Here's some basic information:
Name: Rhapsodia (Suikoden's not even in the name..)

Genre: SRPG

Scheduled release date: 2005 Fall

Time frame: around Suikoden 4 (the heroes are traveling and chasing after the "rune cannon", which is a threat to the world)

Comfirmed Suikoden 4 characters: Lino, Kika, Akagi, Mizuki, Keneth, Harvey

Comfirmed New characters:
Kyril (main character, the red clothed youth)
Andarc (the guy with glasses, subordinate of Kyril's father)
Seneca (the woman who uses a bow gun)
either Raracl or Racral (black hair girl)

Game system:
Combos are available by arranging and positioning the characters
Techniques, such as swing and paring, can be upgraded by experience points
Rune system is the same as the other Suikodens
As you can see from the image, it is in the Suikoden IV timeline. This is good and it is bad. The bad and obvious thing is, Suikoden IV sucked donkey nuts, why would I want to spend time in that timeline again with its lifeless, boring, stupid characters? Well, the answer to this is the good thing, it's possible that, with a little work, they could work on the characters for IV so that they're actually interesting. This game could, if that is even possible, help nullify a lot of Suikoden IV's problems (namely the story). After all, the ending to SIV felt like half a game in the first place so there's lots of potential this game could do.

Also, it seems to me that they are going to place the game around the whole world, for the first time ever will we be able to travel the whole Suikoden world map? The top left pic has mountainous terrain and sandy looking houses: Tinto? And that pic with the sunset and the grass...The Grasslands? Possible, they don't look like anything that was in SIV, unlike the other pics. But it would own if there was a world war or some shit, instead of one region a la every Genso Suikoden in existence.

The major battle systems in past Suikoden's have been pretty fun, all they lacked were amazing depth, customization, and difficulty. Perhaps if they bump up these things in this game, and have the story do exactly what I described above, we will have a winner. But I doubt they'll do it. It's probably another half assed game.

Thoughts? Anyone anticipated? It's coming out this year, that seems relatively fast, especially since SIV came out in Japan August of 2004. I bet it'll be short as hell.

Rofl Suikoden 4 was the worst one by far. Why would they base this game around that Piece of crap? -10000000000000 pts

Konami Plans Suikoden Spinoff
New game to feature simulation gameplay.
by Anoop Gantayat

June 10, 2005 - According to the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, Konami is currently at work on a simulation spin-off from Genso Suikoden. Titled Rapsodia (Rhapsody, perhaps?), the game is being developed for a Japanese PS2 release this fall.

Set in the world of Suikoden IV, Rapsodia presents a brand new story centered on a great canon that threatens to destroy all. Characters from Suikoden IV will appear along side new creations. The known cast features a character called Kyrill as main character. He's joined by Andark, the serious type who acts as a cool head for your party, and Seneca, who serves as a "mood maker."

As you'd expect, given that this is a Suikoden game and all, characters play a big role in Rapsodia. As you build up your party, you'll be able to equip new weapons and magic arts. Using experience points that you've earned in battle, you can raise your the level of your characters' skills, earning new skills in the process. On the battle field, characters can team up for special attacks.
And from Gamespot...
According to the latest issue of Shonen Jump magazine, Konami is making a spin-off of Suikoden IV, which will be titled "Rapsodia" (without Suikoden in its name). Slated for release on the PlayStation 2 this fall in Japan, the game will be the first strategy role-playing game in the series.

Rapsodia will depict the story of a group of travelers in search of a "rune cannon," which represents a threat to the world. The player will take the role of the main character Kiril, a dark-haired youngster who's been traveling with his father and friends. Other party members include Andark, a young, earnest man who works for Kiril's father, and Seneka, a lady who travels with Kiril.

Rapsodia takes place in the same world as the original Suikoden IV, so its characters will be making appearances in the game. One confirmed character is Suikoden IV’s female pirate Kika, an old friend of Kiril and his group. Kika is also spotted in the battle screen, suggesting that the characters from Suikoden IV will be usable as party members as well.

Considering I feel Suikoden IV should be stricken from the record, having another game remind me of its existence in so forceful a manner really pisses me off. This will have to get stellar reviews from people I trust for me to consider buying it.

I actually think the concept of a Suikoden SRPG is stupid. I think instead, they should put more effort into the large scale war battles(and add more of them) to give those battles some of the complexity of an SRPG without doing away with the other elements of the game. Still, it can't be worse than the last one, that's true.

Those ship battles were too easy. So easy they werent even fun. I mean if you knew what you were doing you never got hit and you killed them in a hit. It was uber cake

This is the first Ive heard of this game...surprisingly.

They need to rehire the original director and fire that artist woman who directed 4. Otherwise just end Suikoden before they poison it any further.

Forget this game. Namco x Capcom is already out and a million times more fun than I predict this to be.
It also has good characters as opposed to Suikoden IV ones :upsd

Wha?? You still had to guess which element they would use. I mean if they had them paired like two elements next to each other on the charts not, but they didn't always.

Hudson is developing the game... I don't know if that's a good or bad thing...

Anyway, I'm still hoping this can improve on the very sub-par Suikoden 4.

Hudson is not developing the game. The same people who did IV are developing it.

And this game looks to have potential, after some interviews and scans. Hopefully it will not disappoint.

You aren't a star of destiny, and this isn't a traditional Suikoden game, so I don't count on 100+ characters. I mean really, that in an srpg? Crazy.

Well, that's better than S2 battles.
"HEY GUYS LET'S MAKE THE BATTLES ENTIRELY RANDOM BASED ON CHANCE OLOLOOOLO
That way the weakest unit can beat an entire army if it just gets lucky!!!11 :nub1"
At least they should've made some kind of diminishing returns on those chances :frust
A unit with 73284979832 atk vs a unit with 1 Def, 95% chance of success, FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL OH YOU DIED :frust :frust :frust :frust

Ultimately there wasn't much randomness, even if there was unit to unit. Most battles in Suikoden 2 are automatic lose or win or very near to that.

Except not. Mass battles were 100% made of luck, even if they stacked the favor heavily for you OR for the enemy. I've had ALL the battles ingame go totally the other direction the game "meant" to go, just because of pure luck or pure bad luck.
I've literally had one single last enemy unit kill off ALL my units, simply because he succeeded in his 5% chance attacks and I didn't succeed in my 95% attacks... EVER.
IT WAS FUCKING FRUSTRATING.

S2 mass battles = pure random. Sure, it's unlikely you'll lose with your odds at 95%, but the fact is, that 5% CAN happen 100 or even 1000 in a row. Of course, it can happen for your advantage as well.
This thread is crap. :x

It was quite random.

I don't think the team is bad, just the director, and the person who decided everything should be gray.

Suikoden 2's not that short IMO. I think it's a pretty good, standard RPG length. Suikoden 3 probably took me lobnger even, but it's artificially lengthened in several ways, both by plot devices and game mechanics, so I will concur that it is too short. Suikoden 4 would be shorter than Suikoden 1 if it weren't for the ship, so that's right in there.

I actually miss the horribly bad box art from Suikoden I. It's charming almost.

Where did that box art come from anyway? That can't be what they used in Japan.
