Secret of Mana
I am overhearing rumours that there might be a secret of mana remake. Word is there's a successor to the psp coming up and it'll be made for that system.

Secret of Mana was one of the first Squaresoft games published in Europe, wasn't it ?
Around the same time than Mystic Quest on the SNES, and Mystic Quest (aka Seiken Densetsu 1, the very first Mana game) on the Game Boy, if I remember well.
Anyway, its multi-player feature was fun
(much more fun than the annoying computer controlled characters that would get stuck behind walls all the time, anyway
)
I loved the opening theme (and the opening screen, with the red birds flying in front of the Mana tree, which looked really amazing, by then)

As far as I know, Seiken Densetsu 1 (developed in Japan) was called Final Fantasy Adventure in the US and Mystic Quest in Europe.
And Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (developed in the US) was called Mystic Quest (or maybe Mystic Quest Adventure?) in Europe.
(I say Europe, but actually I know only about France)
... My memory is failing me...
But I'm positive there has been two games labelled Mystic Quest/Mystic Quest Adventure in Europe, one being the infamous Final Fantasy Mystic Quest on the SNES, and the other being Seiken Densetsu on the GB.

I'm teh old school gamer
I remember back then (before the Internet !!) it was quite difficult to get info on the various games (and their various international names). The "missing Final Fantasy" on the SNES had me puzzled for a while, for instance. Took me a while to make sure FFII was actually FF4, and FFIII, FF6 (and took me even longer to finally get my greedy little obsessive/compulsive collector's hands on the oh-so-mysterious FF5...)

I remember looking up Secret of Mana online and not finding one good internet site about it. That's why I decided to make my site. I think all games should have at least one site about them, otherwise people will forget them. The internet's become such a good way to look back at those old games that you played when you were younger. We never used to have that.

Re: Secret of Mana
Eh, I usually don't approve of that kind self-promotional links, but I must say the site is indeed very well documented (I had never seen the German anime ad anywhere before for instance!). A bit slow-loading, but still one of the best SoM fan-site I've seen in a long while.seedofmana wrote:Who remembers Squaresoft's Secret of Mana? I run the biggest website dedicated to it at www.planetnintendo.com/secretofmana so check it out if you remember playing it. What did you lot make of it?

Yeah, same. I found Legend of Mana a bit confusing though and tiresome but the visuals kept me going. Sword of Mana was alright too but none of the games matched Secret of Mana. It's such a shame Squaresoft never released Seiken Densetsu 3 over here, it was a proper SNES sequel to Secret of Mana that only Japan got. Argh.
Legend of Mana graphics are gorgeous, and I think Legend of Mana's plot was actually pretty cool. It's just quite difficult to follow because of the non-linearity of the game, and it might feel a bit weird because the hero (the character controlled by the player) is NOT the hero (main character) of the various storylines (so maybe some players don't feel involved ?)
Yet I found the whole Jumi tragedy pretty involving. And I loved how the overall "cute" look of the game would contrast with the much darker events that could occur on the screen from time to time.

Maybe they just couldn't decide how the characters with a German accent should speak in the German version ?
But the translation excuse is really bullshit (FF4-5-6 re-release was left in english, and nobody complained. "True" european video games fans are used to playing their games in english version)

I love SoM. I have beat it soo many times, but it never gets boring. I agree that the sequels suck. But I noticed that they are make SoM for the DS. All the info they say is that it has "been announced" but I cant wait for it to come out. The first day its for sale Im going to get it.
Does anyone else know else about the DS version?
