Really? I was kind of annoyed by how oversaturated with battling the post-reactor sequence before the train was. Like they were absurdly extending the very short bridge scene from the original. But I'm not too far in.
It's also annoying to me that Classic Mode doesn't actually do anything. I mean sure your character will auto-fight but that's not terribly interesting. What I was hoping it would do is automatically bring up the menu when toy have actions available and it doesn't. The most annoying part of the gameplay is having to babysit those bars to look for the chance to use menu options.

Initial Impressions:
Jesus Christ this game is long. I just made it to Wall Market and I have 20.5 hours logged. They added a lot of stuff, and the scale of Midgar is fucking ridiculous. This is 15 year old me's wet dream of "I wonder what's over there? I wish I could see it!" from the original but 38 year old me with a 5 month old is fucking tired. I feel like I'm not playing the game right either. There's SO MUCH materia that it's overwhelming me and I feel like I'm sacrificing any type of build due to lack of materia slots. I also can't guard/counter for shit which is making battles needlessly frustrating. Also, I'm not fully grasping why I would want to upgrade every weapon I have and switch between them. There seems to be an illusion of choice, but you should just stick with the one that gives the most stats/materia slots. Maybe it will make sense later.
The character banter is top notch though. I've been lolololing all the way through.

You get points for your unequipped weapons though. So it can't really hurt to keep them all upgraded to see what works out. Plus you can emphasize different stats so one could be better for magic use and one for attacking etc. Or you might prefer one with linked slots for certain purposes. I haven't been changing up my weapons a ton, but it seems like there's some decent reason to upgrade them all.

You'd have to know ahead of time what type of enemy you're fighting to switch to a magic build sword for Cloud let's say. The problem is that you can't switch your weapon once a battle starts, so it seems pointless to do anything but a max attack weapon with the most materia slots available, or a balanced version. I have been keeping them as upgraded as points allow, but there's usually a clear winner so the only reason to switch would be to unlock the associated ability. The game is already seeming long enough without me upgrading EVERY weapon for EVERY character after each level "just to see" if an older one pulls ahead again. Seems pointless until end game where you start min/maxing for big fights, but we'll see. Maybe I'm just tired.Lord Golbez wrote:You get points for your unequipped weapons though. Well, for example, I switched to the Iron Sword (probably messed up the name a bit) at first because it had an extra materia slot, but then I got an added materia slot for the Buster Sword and it had a linked slot, so I switched back when I got Elemental materia. I don't think it's crucial to constantly be upgrading each weapon, but every now and then leveling up your unequipped weapons seems reasonable. Especially since you won't know what all the available skills for those weapons are immediately.
I didn't have one of the elements needed equipped. A very long battle and a ton of cussing ensued. I believe I used 13 ethers and about 5 phoenix downs...Lord Golbez wrote:On that note, I've reached Wall Market.. Speaking of knowing stuff ahead of time.
The Hell House tool damn near forever, no doubt in large part because I had Cloud with Fire and Elemental linked on his weapon. Aeris was MVP for thar fight.

I didn't have Ice Materia equipped at all which seems like the worst one not to have because of how much it was using fire. I also wasn't sure what element I was supposed to use when it used electricity but I probably didn't have it equipped. It was a long fight. I considered resetting as soon as I saw it was immune to Cloud's attacks at the beginning. Ultimately that would have been the time-saving choice.
Cybernetic Empire wrote:
I didn't have one of the elements needed equipped. A very long battle and a ton of cussing ensued. I'm becoming progressively more annoyed by the
spectres
in this. I haven't gotten to any clear reveal.
on what their deal is, but it almost doesn't matter at this point.
Specifically how they were used in Chapter 12, but it's been building up before that. Chapter 12 spoilers follow.
No explanation is going to justify them rewriting everything to the extent that the spectres are responsible for everything. It's too much and it's really threatening to ruin the game. From the very beginning the spectres seemed like superfluous filler at best, but now it's much worse and they're actively annoying me by apparently taking away any real agency. Now Wedge doesn't die solely because of Shinra, but apparently mostly because the spectres (whatever their deal is) wanted him to die. The Turks still set off the plate falling, but now they only succeed because Deus ex Spectre wanted it that way. I don't care what the explanation is. Reducing the Avalanche/Shinra conflict to the plaything of some bland newly introduced entity was an extremely bad call. What were they even thinking? All this just for some filler to pad the length? I almost feel like that has to be the reason (even though it's a shit one) because who could think having spectres intervene at every turn in the conflict is a good or even interesting change? I'll bet anything this shit was Nomura's idea.
I don't care what anybody says. This game takes story-based videogames to an entirely new level. Some of the cut scenes are super long and for the first time ever, I actually don't care. I'm finding the story really engaging and I'm enjoying the pacing of the mostly optional side quest sections between the story progression. The alterations to the story is keeping me a lot more gripped than a simple replay with prettier graphics would.

I think you're exaggerating both in terms off the length of cut scenes and the "new level" of storytelling. None of the cut scenes I've seen are particularly long. I've seen plenty of games with much longer cut scenes and I wouldn't even call these atypically long - maybe you're just impatient. As far as the new level of storytelling, whether you're bored by cut scenes is subjective, but I can't think of any objective qualification by which this takes a particularly different approach to storytelling than games that have come before. Of course it's mostly very good - it's building on the bones of a very good story often using exactly the same or very similar lines of dialogue and fleshing it out just enough to feel like real conversations. However, good basic storytelling does not excuse shitty plot elements, and from nearly everything I've seen the
spectres
are a shitty plot element.
Also, let's be clear. Yeah, there are added story elements, and a lot of it is quite good, but it's not THAT much more than the original. The vast majority of the added length is not from added cut scenes. It's from turning 5-10 minute dungeon segments from the original into hour long full dungeons. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's certainly not what I expected. You tell me a whole game is set in Midgar and I have certain expectations that come with that. Expectations that have not been met so far and which I now seriously doubt will be met before the end of the game.

I'll tell you one thing I like, because I'm maybe being a bit too critical in this thread (I hold the game to very high standards) and I'm actually enjoying it a lot. One change I really like that I'm reminded of playing chapter 13.
I really like the extensions of Cloud's visions/flashbacks of Sephiroth. They go beyond what we saw in the original, but are reasonably consistent with what we know from later in the original, are a perfect extrapolation from and improvement on the scenes of Cloud just wigging out in the original, and a nice way to work Sephiroth in before the end of the first part.
Also, even though I'm more partial to a more turn based system , I do find the gameplay very fun and like how the incorporation of ATB actions really let's them keep the versatility of the materia system
