HOT FFVII REMAKE NEWS - yes a thread that’s on topic

Post by WaWard »

The first news since the reveal!

Uematsu is back for the project.

https://twitter.com/RedMakuzawa/status/ ... 2670389248

That's it. Still no release date, but but should be by 2G30.

Also I would've made a poll in this topic. But I can't anymore. :frust :boo

Poll here! :shrap

I’m hoping it’s somehow good but also ends up being delayed enough to be on PS5. It’s simply too late for me to get a PS4 now. :p

Don't worry. The way games are released and rereleased nowadays, I'd be surprised if they didn't also bring out complete/deluxe/Royal Edition/HD Remix or whatever they want to call it on the next gen of consoles. We should doing Hot Topics and start just calling these FFVIIR Thread of the Week :p

My theroy with FFVIIR is that they wil’ Always release them at the end of a generation, and then 2 years later port them to the next generation before starting to work on the next instalment to maximize the amount of people that buy the games twice.

They released the remake on the PS3, then a year or so later on the PS4. I bought it in Japanese on PS3, English on Vita, then got it for the PS4...

I played the Japanese one up to unlocking Blitzball (only got it for the Sporting Real 24 charity marathon, which was before the game came out in English). I played the Vita version about half way through (still the only Vita cart I own) and have yet to open the PS4 version (cost me far less than the other two).

I also ended up buying ps3 FFX-FFX-2 and ps4 FFX-FFX-2.

I thought I had to buy FFX-FFX-2 and boot it up to unlock stuff for Lightning Returns. Not sure if that ended up being true.

Anyway I didnt make an attempt to really play them and Ive considered it pretty low priority as far as getting around to them, but I did recently think of them when playing Kingdom Hearts 2 and how nice it looked.

Maybe next year...

I hadn’t heard about the FFVIII remaster. It doesn’t sound that interesting.

Now that they’re making so many changes in FFVII, I’d rather see them remaking FFVI from scratch. Now that could be a pretty epic game. And then IV next.

They've already done IV.

I'm glad we're getting an FFVIII remaster. I'd rather have that than another modern Square fuck up to my favorite FF.

I never finished because thendifficulty spike ramped too hard near the end and they included weird inheritancd gameplay gimmicks that you probably had to mastet correctly to get through the last dungeon without dying all the time.

Yeah but that’s not what I meant. I think IV deserves a proper remake, with realistic looking characters, etc. Also, some plot parts could definitely have been thickened, for example the whole intro in Mysidia. Characters in FFIV are fantastic and deserve more screen time. Also, the whole prophecy part could have been further developed I guess, while still staying true to the game.

They should do a multi-part FFIV remake. The first part is set entirely in Baron.

You could have a nice first part ending when they open the package, with a nice big cataclysmic scene.

But again, think about the intro part in Mysidia; it could have a great potential if the game properly started from the moment Cecil leaves Baron to go to Mysidia. In the game it’s a mere intro and it’s barely playable but it could have been a proper first quest.

Fair enough, that's true. They could expand on it. It would lend more impact when Cecil returns later in the game. Especially when it more explicitly depicts the killing of the mages rather than just some sound effect/flash followed by the mage disappearing.

But again, think about a whole game set in Baron. Maybe Odin will give you side quests without you even knowing it's Odin yet. They could add a lot more .... ramparts, to make it a bigger world to explore and of course the outer town would be included in the game as well. Think about crossing that moat in full 3D it takes long enough to walk it for the whole prologue to play. Huge Baron castle world! Think of all the quest. Maybe the Mysidian prisoners escape. You track them down to the underwater passage into Baron castle only to catch a glimpse of what looks like Baigan eating one of them with his arms, but Cecil thinks it's just his mind playing trick on him.

*shrug* It was on the DS so it was pretty limited in terms of how characters look.

FFIV ds had voice acting, completely revamped gameplay. full 3d graphics, and fmvs. In terms of effort it's one of the best remakes I've played.

But good news, FFIV has been re-released and remade more than any FF ever so I'm sure you'll get your wish in 2030 when they finally finish the VII remakes.

Sounds like a realistic date.

And I know it was on the DS and they therefore did what was doable on this system. I’m not criticising that remake, all I’m saying is that I would want an FFVI and FFIV remake that are for a PS4 (or 5 or 6 or whatever) system and as polished as possible, unlike the PS1 versions. Both IV and VI have characters and a plot that deserve a proper remake as much as VII does.

I love FFV but quite frankly the plot isn’t that good. What I loved most about the game was the job system. Then again I guess a well made remake would be nice, I’m just worried they would ruin the job system. :sadtea

That's why I mentioned gameplay and not story. Though I like V's story and characters. I doubt they could ruin V's job system. They'd likely put Itou on it.

Honestly IV is the worst of the trilogy for me. A big problem with IV is that once you've played it once you've played it for good. Party members keep coming and going, you lack options and decisions to make. It's a game where you have very little control over things. It's fairly linear and bosses need to be beaten in a specific way. I kind of find it boring after the first run, which is why FFIV ds was so great: finally, a remix for FFIV.

I'd say there's exceptions but many people I know have the same problem with IV. It's the same game each time. Which is why IV has had the most revisions and changes and remakes than any FF I think.

I don’t know if it’s the one I’ve played the most or not but I certainly enjoyed replaying it. Sure, the plot is pretty linear but it’s still pretty good, and there is still room for doing things differently. Like, once I replayed it with the goal of never buying anything ever, that made the game pretty interesting.

One time I had Rydia learn Meteo as a child. That was pretty different.... in terms of how overpowered I was. I kind of like the fact that FFIV more than most other FFs you can greatly overpower because your spell are tied to levels rather than finding things as you progress through the story. Of course, there's ways to overpower in most FF games, but I just like that the limitation is removed. In most other FF games you would not be able to learn Meteor until you've progressed to a point where you've procured something that allows you to learn it. In FFV, the right character classes (at least, I forget if you also have to buy spells). In FFVI, the right esper. In FFVII, the right materia (I guess Comet is closest in this case). In FFVIII the right enemies or draw points. In FFIX the right equipment with Vivi. In FFX, the right key spheres to get to that point on the grid. In FFXII, the right magic shops I think. And so forth. As far as I know, FFIV is the only game in the series where you can learn all black (well, for Rydia you can't get Fire or the level 2 magic right away, but Palom, anyway) or white magic available to a character from the point in the story you recruit them as long as you're willing to put in the grinding time.

When I said there’s little choice I meant in party makeup, strategy. It’s plain Jane. What you see is what you get. FFIV is the only game in the franchise like this. In I you can make your own party made of provided classes. You can roll a Warrior, thief, bm, and wm if you want, or just four warriors. Final Fantasy is famous partly because it’s a series predicated on player choice. II added dialogue options and an unorthodox leveling system. III added a job system. V took that job system and perfected it. VI has character based equipment on top of espers and a whole slew of spells and things to customize out of over a dozen plus characters. VII has materia, limit breaks;etc. VIII with junctions. Even IX, which is the closest analogueto IV, allows more flexibility. You can customize and build weapons through materials, pick party members. This is without mentioning Tactics, X, XII, and the mmo games. We don’t mention XIII here but IV is more reminiscent to XIII than other games in the franchise - you can't fully choose your party for like 25-30 hours and until then characters are pretty much given linear skill development. I'm not sure if we mention XV.

If there’s one word that would be used to describe the series in terms of gameplay ethos it’s this: customization.

IV has no customization.

It’s been awhile but in FFIV how many times does the allow you to pick your own party rather than have it be picked for you?

And since the leveling system is innate and linear there’s no decision making on how you even want to take this pool of characters.

On top of that IV offers little in the way of exploration too.

So your party is almost always pre-picked, you can’t change what those party members *can* do, bosses tend to have gimmicks and specific strategies you must use to beat them, and there’s little exploration.

I love the game and it’s one of my favorite FF’s (I have bought it at least 4-6 times all on various systems) but the game is so different from the franchise and what makes them fun to replay. Once you’ve played IV you’re likely to play it the same over and over.

This is why out of all the FF’s it easily has amassed the most re-releases, remakes, and various “versions”. All are done to spice up the honest to god classic because no one really wants to play FFIV the same all the time and not buying from shops is one of those sort of challenges that doesn’t count for what we are talking about here.

I'm plenty happy playing FFIV the same multiple times, but I'm obviously not going to buy a new version that's exactly the same for any game. That would be insane.

Also, FFIV really has a pretty decent amount of exploration, so I don't see where you're coming from there. It's shorter than most of the later FFs, so there's not a ton, but for the scope of the game there's a pretty good amount. Once you get the airship it doesn't really hold your hand too much in telling you where you have to go. It might say what the destination is, but you pretty much have to figure out where that is. It's pretty easy to end up in Silvera (a completely optional town) or Agart before getting to Toroia. You might even wind up in the ruins of Eblan and find yourself overpowered by Ogres if you open the wrong chest. Then when you actually do have to go to Agart to open the path to the underworld, I'm pretty sure it doesn't tell you where you have to go at all. Just something about a place to use the Magma Key. On top of that, there's three optional dungeons tied to getting summons for Rydia that you again basically stumble upon by exploring. Also, there's a lot of secret passages and such in the dungeons. I'd say it's quite a fair amount given the size of the game.

Yeah, the airship is fun and it does have optional dungeons. I still stand by my opinion on IV though. Great game though, and still one of my favorites. I think IV is always great when you have time away from it. I haven't played it in over a decade.

The amount of FFIV versions is ridiculous.

By my count. I will be check marking the versions that I have:

- FFIV original JP aka hardtype
- FFIV/II original US aka easytype :check
- FFIV Wonderswan
- FFIV PSX which is JP hardtype with complete brand new English translation (my favorite version outside the remake) :check
- FFIV GBA :check
- FFIV PSP which has completely amazing sprite graphics and backgrounds
- FFIV DS :check

FFIV DS has become the benchmark FFIV, the one that's now ported across systems.

I still need to get and play FFIV psp. It looks utterly beautiful.

It was my dream for V and VI to get similar treatment. Never happened. Oh well.

Can we merge this thread with the other FFVII thread? Getting confusing now.

I played FFIV PSP because I didn't play the GBA version and really wanted to realize the dream of replacing Edge with Yang in my final party. It's cool that you can choose from everyone, but that's the only substitution I really wanted to make. Other than Edge, the original final party are my preferred party members.
