2G19 - 1: Resolutions/2G19 Plans

Post by Damien »

First Hot Topic of 2G19 and I'm afraid it's going to be a predictable one.

Have you made any resolutions? Have you already broken them?
What plans do you have in 2G19? What would you like to do more/less of?

My main plan is to actually obtain, move in to and set up the new house, potentially getting a good streaming setup and DDR machine in the basement (can't sound too grown up).
I didn't manage to visit a new country in 2G18, so I want to try that, even if it's just a weekend break somewhere in Europe (perhaps Twitchcon Europe).
I'm also extending Lent by 2 weeks (before Ash Wednesday) this year, to make up for the 2 weeks of Barry Rule in Japan last year (and also because I weighed myself yesterday and I'm the heaviest I've been since 2G12 :heh).

I might go to Canada once I get my passport. If this pregnancy makes it to term, that might change travel plans, but that will be ok, because I will have a living child.

Weight loss is a perpetual struggle, and since I can't bike anywhere here, that's going to be even harder than when I was in WI.

I've never left the US. Not entirely sure where I'd go yet, haven't really thought about it seriously. Most likely Montreal as part of a roadtrip through Vermont and upstate NY, though.

Haven't ever had the opportunity. :shrug

I'm going to Vietnam at some point in the future, but not this year. I need to accrue vacation time first.

The RDM has no specific plans. Probably lose 15 pounds. He started working out last year and has a bit of momentum, so it might be possible. The RDM wants to pay off a lot of debt this year. It's kind of out control since he dropped so much money on the solar last spring. Probably go to Canada at some point this year, probably publish one to two books, do some work on the camp, all that good stuff.

Wishing you luck on the pregnancy/child front, Mitsurugi.

My resolution was to not use vacation on work last year. Hopefully it will go better this year because I'm part time.

I should have put buying a new vacuum cleaner down as a New Year's Resolution. Decided to get one now, rather than wait until moving. Been using a partially broken one for years now, and it's paaaainful. Good 2G19 upgrade. Read more about it in LPTPW :p

For me:

- Become comfortable speaking French. This one's a long time coming. I've been at the same not-terrible-but-can't-really-converse level for years.

- Learn at least 6 French songs, able to sing/play from memory, including understanding the lyrics. (I'm starting with "Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille" by Jacques Dutronc.)

- Develop some musical fluency on guitar. If I hear some sequence of notes, I want to have an intuitive sense of "that's a semitone" or "that's a fifth", etc., and to be able to apply that to the guitar fretboard.

- Read a book every day. Not a whole book--just read, from a book.

And to continue last year's themes, practice mindfulness, take responsibility, and be assertive. These ones are vague; I need to think of how to make them more concrete.

We got a Roomba as an Xmas gift and it is very nice. Now I just vacuum the kitchen once a week manually instead of daily.

Spot cleaning mainly in the kitchen, but yeah. Our dog licks the floor for whatever morsels he can find if I don't stay on top of it, and I hate the sound he makes when he licks anything. It sounds like someone fisting a bowl of Jello.

Well, I'm not posting in the "I feel old" thread, but that's what caused my resolution of sorts: to be nonstop productive the next few years and see what I can accomplish, so that I don't keep feeling like "Huh, I wonder what life would have been like if I wasn't always slacking off?"

I negotiated reduced hours at work and so far this year I've been blasting through personal projects :-) leaving a blaze of green behind me on my github activity graph.

So far so good.

(background detail, I have a massive collection of "wouldn't it be cool if" project ideas, and over the years they've changed from a source of inspiration to a source of depression.)

Passive income is easy, you just need to be so rich that banks will pay you a living wage for the honour of holding onto your fortune.

that is the safer way. or have desperate people pay you more to borrow it.

but sometimes desperate people don't make the smartest choices about paying things back so it gets troublesome.
