@Kage - There were a lot of references to American movies (The Shining, The Untouchables, Forrest Gump), but I was wondering if the original Chinese dialogue quoted movies as much as the subtitles did (Spiderman and The Matrix among others).
This movie definitely ranks among the most bizarre I've seen, but in a good way.
If you have been a stephen chow's fan, you will also noted that he recycles most of his gags too, the deadpan way he does it is what makes it seems fresh each time. He has a good timing with puns and jokes.
I've seen Kung Fu Hustle and it is really original. It's like an operatic, comedy take on films like Hero and House of Flying Daggers. Totally worth checking out.
i have just recently aquired 20+gigs of Steven Chow movies.... and i must say that A Chinese Odessey is by far one of the funniest movies of his that i've seen so far... he also made a movie called King of Comedy with Jackie Chan, but i cant get the subtitles to work and i dont know chinese ;__;

God of Gamblers III was not as funny as I recall. His older movies contain a lot more slapstick humor, and his newer movies like Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle have a lot more humor in the dialogue, and he actually keeps a straight face when the occasional slapstick humor shows up, so it makes it that much funnier.
Still, I'd like to get my hands on all 20 gig of that.
