This anime/manga is based entirely on music. You have the band, who is trying to become sucessful. They make EP's, tour, participate in contests and festivals, and the whole story is just exhilirating. But behind the whole music scene, you have a great cast of characters. In Beck you've got romance, drama, some action (occasionally which is often caused by the amazingly awesome Chiba - the lead singer), and theme of doing what you're good at and try to be your best pop up continously through the story. Also included are a lot of references to real life instruments and artists. I think that music enthusiasts would find it interesting.Yukio (also called Koyuki) is somewhat of a loser. He's not very popular, athletic or musically talented. In fact his favorite musician is an idol singer.
His life seems to be on an upswing when he gets reacquainted with a childhood friend, Izumi and when he meets Ryusuke, a musician with connections to the very popular American band, Dying Breed.
Through Izumi and Ryusuke, Yukio becomes acquainted with the world of rock music and finds that he loves the Dying Breed. He then aspires to be a musician and begins to learn the guitar. His quick progress with the guitar and his incredible voice earn him a spot in Ryusuke's band, Beck.
The anime is 6 episodes in. And this is a long story, the manga is 19 volumes (and yes I have read them all and caught up - Beck is quite addicting), and I don't see the story ending anytime soon. One of the draws I have with Beck is that time actually passes. You have characters getting older and maturing. At the beginning of the manga Koyuki is 14 and currently he's 19.
This is highly recommended.
Okay, I just found out that Beck anime is going to be 26 episodes.
