Around an hour ago, me and my bandmates finished up practicing in our basement. I decided to check emails and whatnot, so I sat behind my computer, not noticing a almost empty 7-11 cup containing a small amount of melted Slurpee (for those who don't know, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slurpee, educate yourself!). My one roommate purchased an external hard drive quite a while ago, and for the better part of however long he's had it, it's been sitting on a shoebox around my makeshift desk connected to my laptop.

Anyway, a bunch of us knuckleheads were just sitting around, shooting the shit, etc, when I turned to talk to someone. My hand hit the unnoticed cup, spilling all over everything that was on the shoebox. As soon as that happened, I went into an extreme panic mode, grabbed a shirt next to me, soaked off whatever liquid was on top of the hard drive, unplugged the power adapter and USB cable, drained out as much liquid as I could get out, and since then it has been sitting on it's side in a safer location. I tried to power it up once or twice around then, to no avail obviously.

I haven't told him yet, as I am hoping that allowing it to sit on it's side to dry out will do the trick (a few people I know have done this with their laptops after spilling garbage on it). I am pretty much fucked and will have to buy him a new one, aren't I?

I think so too actually. I decided to give it a try again, and well, the hd's on light doesn't light up, but when I plugged the usb cable in, instead of Windows telling me I have a malfunctioning device it cannot recognize, the pop up balloon said "New USB device detected".

I unplugged it and will let it dry out on it's side more. Maybe, just maybe there's hope.

I think you should unplug it and then rinse it with water, don't saturate it but get the sticky off. Can't get much worse really can it?

Good thinking, I will have to do that later. Thankfully it's not really sticky at all, except the bottom (where it sat in the puddle of spilled slush for like half a minute), and parts of the top.

I was thinking of taking the actual hd out of the case and swapping it with a swab soaked in a little alcohol, but since I've been smoking a little of ye ol' herb, I don't want to risk dropping and losing any tiny screws.

Put the little tiny screws on a magnet (obviously don't put the magnet near the hdd) then you won't lose them.

Don't put water on the hard drive! You'll kill it! Better it be sticky than flooded.

Alcohol is a muhc better idea because it evaporates to fast.

Oh, I meant I was going to just get the sticky off the bottom of the actual external case, not the hard drive itself. I don't hate my roommate enough to do that.
