Genso Suikoden Rhapsodia (Tactics)
Moderator: Lord Golbez
I'm really enjoying this so far. The interface is sleek, the backgrounds are SUPERB and very big, the music is at times a throw back to I and II (actually it really reminds me of Chrono Cross.), the battles are very very fun thanks to the element system. Thus far I'm really impressed.
Lazlow actually has a personality. The direction of the story is pretty good so far, it doesn't feel half assed like IV's. The dialouge is pretty good, it doesn't feel like you walked into the middle of a damn conversation...like in IV...and another great thing, the cutscenes don't end randomly and have a black screen inbetween them...like in..well..IV. Pretty good stuff. The voice acting is surprsingly adaqute. Anarc's voice is kinda annoying though.
I likes.
edit: Wow. Thiis is pretty good so far. Some of the characters in IV that didn't have ANY personality at all but were just there like Sigurd and Hervey have personalities! This is a very story based srpg. Color me impressed.

Yea I played the first 2 levels and I stopped. It was just the same shit again anyways. Nothing spectacular, not that I was expecting anything of that sort.
I'm not going to say it's dissapoiting because I expected to be dissapointed. Oh well the soundtrack was pretty cool. Other than that, can't say I'm impressed at all.

Yea seriously. This game is nothing to be impressed about AT ALL.
It's like playing a good game for the 10th time. Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility states that each time you consume something, it gets less and less satisfying. SRPGs are getting less and less satisfying, because they hardly are any different from any other ones.
And don't tell me it is significantly different from any other SRPG. That is complete bull.

No it doesn't. This is based on IV so there is no Suikoden goodness. Just a cliche' "omg we have to save the world!" plot. But then again, it's still a better game than Suikoden IV.
Rhapsodia is a better suited name than Suikoden Tactics. It's like saying Suikogaiden is a real Suikoden. Or Card Stories.
I like it because the element system makes combat seriously fun. Voice acting was alright at first, but degraded into shit. The graphics (or rather the characters) SUCK. The story is silly and often ridiculous, but atleast it feels in IV's plot holes, but even that's not saying much.
Still, I'm not anal about it. My Suikoden fanboy hood has nothing to do with how I am approaching Tactics as it is hardly what one would call a Suikoden.
Ikari, so I take it you don't like other srpgs then? "Omgz I h8 this new srpg it's like everyother srpg!!" What were you expecting? A new breakthrough in srpgs?

No I liked most SRPGs to a point. Then they became the same thing. I got tired of playing the same thing all over again. I gave most of them a chance and they were all the same.
No I wasn't expecting anythign different I already stated that. I got this game mostly because it wa a Suikoden game. As I said I wasn't dissapointed, because I wasn't preparing for anything more than mediocre which is what it would be if I wanted to play it.

Uh...yeah, because calling it "Suikoden Tactics" is the same as calling it a "real" Suikoden.himurokoken wrote: Rhapsodia is a better suited name than Suikoden Tactics. It's like saying Suikogaiden is a real Suikoden. Or Card Stories.
That said, it's completely inexcusable for them to sell more trash under the name Suikoden. After misling many people with the lame ass excuse for a game, Suikoden IV, the story of this game should be immaculate. Seeing a fan of the game say such things about the plot and characters makes me glad I haven't bought it. I vowed not to jump the gun because of the name "Suikoden" after S4, and I'm sticking to it. There's pretty much no chance I'll get this now. I'll read important plot information on a website if I think it may affect future games (God forbid).
The TBB offers you tea and biscuits.
I said that because it has nothing to do with the Chinese Legend and isn't an adaptation, which Suikoden strives off of, and is entirely based around. Still, I understand why they called it Suikoden Tactics, to get the product name on there and sell units. But even so, having the name Suikoden and not even having the elements of a Suikoden makes the name unfitting to me. You can roll your eyes all you want.
The story is good but it's a little silly for my tastes. Still, the fact it fills in the gaps in IV is good. It's still an overall better game than IV.

An Epic RPG infused with a rich, vibrant plot
10 years after the first "Suikoden," this new installation takes place at the Queendom of Falena--a land of many rivers and vast forests. The destiny of many people intertwine around the prince of Falena over the fate of one of the 27 True Runes, the Sun Rune.
Having the longest and deepest scenario within the seires, the story imbued with treachery, resentment, and redemption will create a moving experience as the hero and his 107 comrades gather.
Personable characters, large and varied towns
Many characters with a wide variety of experssions!
Famous voice actors en masse!
Explore the world map and dungons with a top-down camera view that maximizes playability. The number of towns and dungeons exceed all other installations in the series. There will be a number of hidden dungeions.
Also, growing headquarters will be back! It will grow as you progress the plot.
Evolved battle system and skill system
The unique Suikoden battle system where multiple characters attack at once has evolved, adding new features. Your formation can be changed during battle, which adds a new layer of strategy. As fans wished, the 6 member battle roster will be back! Your party can have a maximim of 10 members including your convoy. A new skill system will also be introduced that would give added uniqueness to each character.
Many hours of gameplay and replayability
In addition to having the longest scenario, the game will have multiple endings including bad endings. The plot will branch out in many ways depending on the many choices (most numerous among the series) made by the player, giving new discoveries to players upon every additional playthrough.

Well well, sounds promising, doesn't it?

Hmmm. so it's not before Suikoden II then! Viktor and Flik?!
One thing, I know it's still early to say this, but quite a number of the 27 True Runes have been revealed already. I'm going to be really pissed if they're so careless as to make more than 27, because they failed to pay close attention to everything that has happened so far. Inconsistencies are bad, and Suikoden has certainly had some already, but that would be unforgivable.

Ward has a point.
If you really dont know
Suikoden is based off an old chinese legend called "The Water Margin"
Suikoden literally means water margin story
Suiko = Water Margin
Den = story
It seems to be an episodic story to some extent. chapters focusing on specific characters and then they all eventually join up to be the 108 bandits of the water margin and fight the evil empire
It's kinda like chinese robin hood with way too many characters
The story has several different versions and several different endings
None of them seem pleasant. Either the 108 guys all die or they join the Empire they're fighting at the end. It's been theorized the chinese government had the tale censored since it sounded anti government
Suikoden was a craze like the Beatles in Japan for awhile. All those huge ass full back tattoos you see were inspired originally by the Suikoden craze in the 1800s
The games take popular themes from the legend but thats all.

Not to mention a lot of the stars of destiny in Water Margin were pretty corrupt people involved in rape, murder, and so forth. It'd be crazy if you had characters like that in your Stars of Destiny in Genso Suikoden games.
I've wanted to read that book but it's really really huge I hear. I also can't find it.
Isn't Dynasty Warriors another derivation of that story? And Romance of the Three Kingdoms?

hey three kingdoms is an old chinese myth!!
i own and have read them both thx
the characters you refer to were portrayed more like vigilantes or those who were backed into a corner by the corruption of the empire
suikoden does a good job of crafting characters that possess similar traits to their stars of destiny counterparts in the book
for example:
tenkai star = leader
tengou star = 2nd in command
tenki star = strategist
tenkan star = sorceror
tenyu star = tank
tenken/tenzai/tenhai = a group of three (in the book they were three brothers, in S1 they were the pirates, in S2 the circus chicks + Bolgan, in S3 Melville and co.)
tensatsu = barbarian type (though Hanna in 2 kinda sucked)
btw, water margin is a gay name, call it outlaws of the marsh

i was being sarcasmic
hkk: i just meant the part about most of the stars being bad people
for example:

for example:
Nicknamed the 'Rash One', Shi Xiu appeared burly but was pretty dexterous, and was known to prefer his own brtual style of justice.
Shi's main tale is found in the middle chapters of the Water Margin, where he kills the wife of Yang Xiong, his best friend. The wife had an affair with a monk but framed Shi as a molester when the latter found out about it, driving a wedge between the two best friends. Eventually Yang discovered from the murder of the monk that his wife had been adulterous and had her slain. Unknown to these two brothers, Dai Zhong and Yang Lin, followers of Chao Gai in Liangshan, were privy to these events. So when Shi and Yang were on the run, they were recommended to join the Liangshan cause.
Over there, the duo were ranked as two of the '36 Heavenly Chieftains'.
