The year two thousand and fucking seven says hi about that. At this point, I'd say there is only yourselves (ourselves?) to blame.

Yeah, I read that.
It's not like SG would've gained new members with open registration - at least the chances are abysmal - but jesus H christ. Why the fuck would you do that when you could just... I dunno, FIX the fucking problem?

It seems to me that the spambots mostly make their own threads, rather than replying to the latest post. So I don't see how your first two solutions would help. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding and you're saying create an isolated sub-forum. I guess it could work, but it sounds like it might be complicated.
The other stuff would maybe work, but I don't know if anyone other than man of txt has the ability to implement it.

That post is over eight years old. I can't remember the details, but I'm pretty sure that the current bots work differently.
#1 is thus obviously outdated, but fuck, the rest would still work. There's also a thousand other ways to do that shit.
YOU HAD EIGHT YEARS TO LEARN IT
HOW HARD CAN IT BE

I'm not the one in control of this forum. The person that is found out that it'd take starting from scratch and had better things to do so simply disallowed all usernames.Slashley wrote:That post is over eight years old. Well, I was wrong about at least one thing. There were definitely more than 20 posters who showed up today. Also, Undine!Lord Golbez wrote:I put 1 to 3 odds on Undine showing up. She's posted this year once, but I'm still not so confident she'll make SG day.
I'd place 1 to 100 odds on Yuka making an appearance. She hasn't posted once in several years.
I'd guess that maybe around 10 to a dozen people will post. A more optimistic would be 15-20. If it goes over 20, I would be pleasantly surprised but almost as shocked as if yuka appears.... almost.
1 to 33 odds on 20 or fewer.

At least people dig this thread up now, rather than make another identical one
I remember having big plans for SG in 2005 (though I was mostly unemployed). When I started doing prize draws for games and barely anybody entered, that, I think was the tipping point when I realised people weren't coming to SG for anything at all other than forum posting.
Saying that, I may do another Jaffa Cakes art competition at some point

You know, whenever I see somebody wear kneepads... like, rollerskaters or stuff...Lord Golbez wrote:I wonder about ten years from now when this is the good old days. Except it will probably either be much the same as now, or SG won't be around to reminisce on, so I guess the good old days will still be like 20+ years ago then...
I think of you.
This was totally related, as you can see

As nice as the idea of an all new, rejuvenated SG sounds, I really don't see any way of making it possible.Cid wrote:You could probably give the site a shot in the arm with a redesign and influx of content around the same time as a major Square release. So you've got a window of opportunity about once every 12 years.
Even if the site were started from scratch (not even considering the hours and effort that would need to be put in to getting this going) with written content and staff, I don't see the place generating any more residual buzz than your regular SG Day form event. Fan sites and forums just don't work the same way as they did in the late 90's and early 00's. People want to get their news from blogs and social media, not be part of a community. We tried this a few years back with Hype Up. There was a lot of buzz at the start, but it dropped off very quickly, despite almost daily news updates (including features and podcasts etc). I believe SG has a far better purpose and value simply as it is, an archive that goes back to the archaic age of internet communication. An archive that you can still post in, if for any reason you happen to want to

I was thinking about that the other day. I checked in on a couple other massive forums I used to frequent and it's the same story everywhere, a ghost town. It's actually kind of irritating how back in the day it was more or less uncool to be on the internet a lot, now everyone is on it all the time flooding it with selfies and "when you ______" memes and the things I used to love aren't around anymore. Ugh.

Are you sure that's what people want and not just their limited options? SG is one of the few places people still have the option of being part of a forum community. Blogs and social media are...meh, but they've taken over.Damien wrote:As nice as the idea of an all new, rejuvenated SG sounds, I really don't see any way of making it possible.Cid wrote:You could probably give the site a shot in the arm with a redesign and influx of content around the same time as a major Square release. Not that anyone cares, but interestingly (to me
) one of the biggest websites in France in terms of traffic is jeuxvideo.com. The forum already existed back in the "good old days" too.
http://www.jeuxvideo.com/forums.htm
Their fora are still booming, they're like the richest website in France.
So yeah, at least the forum concept still works in countries which hate change.

I don't think there's anything I/we could possibly do to make SG popular for long enough to pay off for the effort it requires.
The fact that hardly anybody here plays/likes Square games any more doesn't help. We'd have to go Sektor 7/Wandering Flame/Geekspot/Hype Up on it, and you know how that one ends.
