I remember when I thought UCLA's dorm food was bad (it wasn't, I was just spoiled back then). Now I eat cardboard made by army privates at army dining facilities. Pretty soon I'll be out of the army (and a job) and I'll look back fondly on that cardboard.
You're attending a college but don't have any money for food? Even if you don't make any money, you (I'm assuming) pay your college costs somehow so I'm sure you could afford to buy some Top Ramen at least. Hell, crash a party and eat their food.

Do that if you want to set your mind at ease, but honestly research is increasingly showing that vitamin supplements not only fail to be beneficial, but can actually be harmful.Vibing_V wrote: When you get money at some point you should buy a daily multivitamin (or ask your parents to send you some or something) so that you can at least get your daily vitamins and minerals in amidst that crap food.

Well, the thing is that it turns out that beta carotene actually works with other carotenoids, so while scintists initially jumped to conclusions when noticing that people with lower cancer rates had higher levels of beta carotene in their blood (this might be a little off, but it's pretty close to what happened), it actually doesn't do that by itself, which is pretty much why you should always get your vitamins from actual food sources, because they pretty much never work the same way in isolation as they do together with other nutrients you get in those food sources.

If a diet requires you to take supplements then surely the diet is unhealthy?
I once knew a veggie who had to drink Slim Fast to get her protein fix. I find it weird how arrogant veggies always say it's the healthier diet and such, but you need a chemical shake? No.
I'll stick with good old tasty meat thank you.

Just because some idiot thinks she needs a shake to get protein that doesn't mean that vegetarianism is an unhealthy diet. As far as the B12 thing goes, well I take it as precautionary measure, but plenty of people get by fine without supplementation and meat eaters are proportionally as likely to develop B12 deficiency. By the way, B12 does not come from meat, not directly anyway. It comes from bacteria, and probably the main reason that we can't get it direcly from a vegan diet is because of modern food sources and concerns over cleanliness. Also, humans have this bacteria, but by some weird twist of fate it's too low down for us to absorb the B12 into our system. This is kind of strange and it leads to questions about why that would be, at least it does for me. It also leads some wackos to suggest that we should be getting B12 from some rather disgusting practices......Yuka wrote:If a diet requires you to take supplements then surely the diet is unhealthy?

The RDM's not a vegan, he's an ovo-lacto vegetarian, so he gets plenty of B12 from cheese.
The protien argument against vegetarianism is totally bunk. Most people seem to have this ridiculous idea about how much protein is needed on a daily basis.
Eat three spoon fulls of peanut butter in a day and you've gotten all the protein you need.

Well eating processed crap isn't healthy either. Obviously natural sources are better, I would never disagree with that, but HKK clearly isn't getting a well balanced diet from his school cafeteria, so in this case I think the next best thing would be better than nothing.
Or I guess a fortified cereal like Vector would do the trick.
Personally I have to girl-style multivitamins (extra calcium and iron) because I've recently started to get anemic.... you know. >.> My doctor told me to take multivitamins with extra iron rather than iron supplements because apparently iron supplements are hard to take (I guess they play a number on your digestion system or something).
