Gaming Achievements?

Post by Redlimit »

In the other thread (FFVII Dirge) we had some discussion about what makes a gamer "hardcore". Ideas like "they have been playing for a long time - NES or pre-NES era", "they totally devote themselves to one type of game", they re-play game(s) religiously....

I suppose all have their arguements, but one thing that crossed my mind was "gaming acheivements". These can be simple such as beating a particularly hard game, or doing something special in a game (a challenge type playthrough). Is this a definition of hardcore? If so, what have you done towards this goal?

Over the years I like to replay old games a lot, but I like to do different things when I replay them. This keeps you interested for a 2nd and MAYBE a 3rd playthrough, but after that you need motivation to do it again. I had heard of 'video game speed runs', and shortly afterwards about 'challege modes' for games set by players. I did a few of them over the past 2 or 3 years.

Here they are listed, along with anything else I consider to be a "video game acheivement".

Final Fantasy VII - No materia game
I thought this would actually be pretty hard, but as it turns out beating the games with the Fight command, Limit Breaks, and Items is not that bad. There are a few hard parts like the Living Wall boss in Temple Of The Ancients, Diamond Weapon, Proud Clod, and suprisingly final form Hojo was a real bastard as well (never would have guessed).
But, basically you use the most damaging limit breaks (Cloud/Cid/Barret), stock up on X-Potions from those bugs in Wutai area, and whomp ass for the whole game.

Final Fantasy VI - No level up game
Overall this was MUCH harder than a FFVII no materia game. You have to run from every EXP battle, and fight bosses (they don't give EXP) with ultra-low levels. Depending on which version you have this gets easier in the World Of Ruin as you can use the 128% MBlock trick to make things a bit better on yourself, and you can finally fight enemies to learn magic that don't give EXP. For the most part though you have to really know a lot about the bosses and how to battle them the best. In case you try this, I will say that the best way to beat some bosses is not outright killing them quickly - strategy comes into play big time and you can get some truly marathon style epic battles. This was a really fun one to try though.

Devil May Cry - Beat game on Dante Must Die mode
I include this because to this day I have not played a game that is harder when at max difficulty. The boss battles are huge endurance matches, and require flawless gameplay. The final few boss battles can take over 30 minutes each to pull out a win. My hat goes off to anyone else who has done this.

Metriod Fusion - 1% game
This one actually wasn't too hard, once you got used to only having 99 energy for the whole game. A 0% game would be possible but there is a badly placed missle expansion that cannot be avoided in any shape or form.

Metroid Prime - 23% game
This is the lowest normal % you can get (a 22% game is apparently possible, but you have to sell your soul to the devil - I forget what item you have to skip but its seriously NOT cool). Again, not bad once you get used to it. Most bosses are easy as hell to dodge. The battle with the Omega Pirate is the worst part, but only because of his annoying regular Space Pirate buddies beating the shit out of you while you are trying to get a bead on the big man. The bomb-jump-into-space-jump-looking-down technique is a cruel mistress, but you need it in two areas of the game. Get used to breaking shit around you in anger. :boom

Right now I'm just starting a No Junction game of FFVIII. I hear its not super hard, but it is supposed to have its moments. Basically you don't junction a GF ever, or learn any GF abilities. This means you get Fight and Limit Breaks only in battle, and you get the Item command out of battle. I beat Diablos first try (I got lucky but still...), and had a pretty down to the wire fight with Fake Deling on the train. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I've never beat MGS2 on European Extreme mode either...perhaps I'll try someday...

Anyone else done anything like this? Any games you have beaten that you consider a 'badge of honor' on your gaming records?

EDIT: Added in some ones I did that I forgot about at time of original posting.

Dante Must Die mode is the only one I can mention. Never again. Never.

This took me all to long to finish, and it frusterated the hell out of me. I'm glad I finished it though.

I have never attempted any of these RPG challenges, such as the ones you have mentioned, though I have thought about them. I did complete FF7 in 40 hours with everything complete (weapons defeated, level 99, gold choco, all materia mastered sans enemy skill, etc.) but that was just on a normal playthrough that ended up being rather fast I thought. I still read all the text and stuff. Always thinking about trying for a pure speed 100% run on that game though.

Here is an interesting/entertaining website for challenges. This is the Speed Demo Archive. It has video files and information about all kinds of game speed runs, and shows many of the current world records.

http://www.planetquake.com/sda/other/other.html

I recommend watching the Super Metroid videos - this game has had the crap speed runned out of it and people are getting scarily good at it. Some of the techniques used will have your eyes as wide as dinner plates.
A lot of the other videos are pretty crazy as well.

As for Metroid Zero Mission, taken from the Archive, the best 100% run is 57 minutes, and the fastest any% run is 29 minutes. Thats pretty scary.

These things have always fascinated me, though I've only attempted one; a monk SSC (Single Class Challenge) for FFT. I got about 3 hours in, and stoppoed for some reason or another. Still, these things always seemed really cool.

I don't have any.

Maybe getting fourth place in GGXX/#R tournies a few months in a row, or beating people in MvC2 with Felicia, Tron, and Buletta for 10 wins straight or so.

Dante Must Die is seriously one of the most insane game modes in history. Not that I cleared it, of course, but it ranks up there with Battletoads. ;)

I admittedly am not really hardcore, despite being the one to have sewn the seeds for this topic (:p). I guess the only time that I've actually tried to bend over backwards for something was during my unhealthy Chrono Trigger phase... I got up to Queen Zeal in the Black Omen having fully completed every single sidequest beforehand in 4:46. Obviously this was an extremely overpowered NG+ that I was playing, but yeah.

Edit: I just checked my game... I previously claimed that I only saved once, but it was actually three times. Oh well.

Clearing Dante Must Die mode was definietly a big acheivement and anyone who can clear this mode deserves respect as this is no easy task at all and the rewards were well worth the trouble.

Clearing the original MGS2 on Extreme Mode was also a huge achievement since I was one of the few people who beat Vamp without using the Stinger/Bandanna trick.

The only thing that made the final battle with Solidus difficult in Extreme mode was its completely impossible not to lose 3/4 of your health meter when he chokes you in the scene before the fight, even if you use the "look to the left" trick to make it a bit easier.

Fighting Solidus is a big game of 'hit him a few times, back off and kneel to stop bleeding, dodge, repeat'. This goes on for about 10 minutes. :(

I figured more people here would have done these sorts of things. This is quite a suprise to me actually that a lot of you have not. :!

On a side note, I beat Vamp without the Stinger trick the first time through Extreme, every other playthrough though he eats my rockets to save time. :evil

Best I've got is that I'm trying to get 100% completion on Metroid Prime. It's not collecting items or scanning lore and logs... It's the scanning of creatures that's been getting me. Sure I have a Missile (and apparently an 8th power bomb which I have discovered, and can't remember where it is) to get, but finding the monsters I haven't scanned yet is a bitch. Now, no matter what, 2 of the spots in Monster Data will remain as ???? as they are reserved for Metroid Primes 2 forms. I think I have 5 or 4 ???? right now. Knowing 2 of them belong to Metroid Prime, I have 2 or 3 to find. So far this is the only thing I've really tried at.
Beating Super Metroid in under 3 hours to see Samus out of her suit at the end is easy. I can even get the Spring Ball and X-Ray visor without going over my time.
Other than that I suppose getting all of my Pokemon to level 100 in Blue Version was an occomplishment. Perhaps getting to the fight with Ganon and winning in TLoZ: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages is something. I haven't done much. But I can say this, completing the story mode in F-Zero GX... THAT will be something.

If you don't have a scanner entry for "Ice Shreikbats" in your log, you are fucked for 100% scans. They only appear once in your first time in Phendrana Drifts. They are in the area with the destroyed buildings that you shoot down an icicle to get on top of. There is a flock of them by the door out of that area on the rooftop. If you don't scan them right then, they don't come back.

To my knowledge they are the only regular enemy you only get one shot at scanning.

I also remembered another of my "old school" challenge games. I beat Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past with the regular 3 heart containers only, and no armor upgrades (blue/red). Bottle faries are your friends....

I played through the PSX version of FF1 with 4 thieves because I thought it would be fun, and it was~

That game is much harder than the NES version. Bosses have way more HP. I was forced to get all my guys level 50 and made them ninjas (i dont know if this was necessary but it helped a lot) and I still barely beat Chaos.

Can Ninjas equip Blood Swords? I don't remember if they can or not, but that weapon does sick damage to Chaos for no real reason that has ever been explained. :l

Having the ability to cast Haste is a nice bonus too when you are a Ninja.

I'm looking to do a weird sort of challege when I pick up FF1&2 for GBA. Thinking about a 4 White Mage game so far.

I dont know if they can equip those. I never knew there was anything special about them. I do know that a ton of items that you only get 1 of are Fighter only which makes me think they expect every party to have at least one fighter.

Ninjas should be able to use it all :frust

jesus god no kidding
I've got all chapters done on the first two difficulties I think, and a few on the hardest, but I don't know if I'll ever get them all
that game has a crazy amount of unlockable stuff

and if I ever beat the boss of viewtiful joe on v-rated, I'll be impressed with myself
if I can beat it on ultra v-rated... well, I just don't think I'll be able to

I did, however, play through all of metroid prime using only samus~!

MGS2 on Extreme mode in about 90 minutes.

I have also beaten Metroid: Zero Mission in 58 minutes without using bomb jumping to get things early and without skipping any areas. I'd like to see how fast I could get 100% in that game since I know the levels inside out.

Killey: In order to get the stinger trick to work on Vamp you should try running closer to the pool before pulling out your stinger and firing away at him.

I've finished Metal Gear Solid 17 times, completed all difficulties and VR missions, gotten all secrets, etc. I pretty much worship that game. Can't say I've done anything else you could call "hardcore". I completed Super Mario 64 twice with all secrets and stars etc.

Oh, and I beat Contra without using the konami code. That was fucking hard. But I've probably beat contra over 100 times (with code). Contra is like the best game ever made.

Did anyone beat Ninja Gaiden on hard for xbox? That's crazy.

The most difficult game I ever completed was Master Blaster on the NES after owning it for like 12 years. I hate that game with a passion.

I also did a "No Materia"-game of Final Fantasy VII, but that wasn't so hard. I got all shines in Super Mario Sunshine too, but that just took forever; so did getting 100% in Gran Turismo 3. Bleh.

Avoiding the missiles is piss easy, it by no means makes Solidus the easiest boss battle. I figured out that all you had to do was just fall off the roof. The difficult part came after Solidus took off his extra arms, and his random burning attack where he just jumps across the room a few times. Yes, yes I know you're supposed to guard those, but I can never get the timing right and which direction he comes from because he changes really quickly.

I had forgotten about Ultra-V Rated in Viewtiful Joe. It wasn't "OMG WTF" hard like Dante Must Die mode was, but it was certainly a swift kick in the rear in difficulty that I wasn't accustomed to for a while.

Is Ninja Gaiden really that hard? It is one of the games that has been nagging me to get an X-Box. I heard that its hard until you get the hang of it (which takes a while) then the game just seems to flow from there. Still thats pretty cool and its certainly harder than most of the run-of-the-mill games we have out now.

I can consistently get to the 'Clinger Winger' level in Battletoads, but depending on how I'm doing that day I can beat it or choke badly. That level is something directly from hell its self.

At the moment I'm replaying FFIV hard-type without buying any item or equipment, and without using items on my team (though they do have equipments, and I did use one or two potions on zombies... =/).
I started one game like that a few years ago but then I just never finished it, so I restarted a new one last week (spamming that tea forum made me want to play FFIV again @_@). Haven't done much so far though. I'm not trying to play as fast as possible, though I may skip a few sidequests... :erm

Yeah, anyway, other than that I just do silly challenges with FFT, but I never finish them because my memory cards get deleted or something... :(
Anyway, FFT has so much replay value, I love this game. ^_^ :love

And, hmm, what else?? Well, normally I add 'rules' when I replay a game, but that can be anything really, so I can't think of anything in particular right now... =/

Oh, and when I play Tetris, I always start at level 19! Do it count as a silly hardcore challenge? :D

Ent', you should post the link to that Mario 3 game finished in 15mn or something... :D

The Super Mario 3 speed run video is on the link I gave a few posts back.

Current world record is 11:11. The video that was 10 minutes and has the guy getting 99 lives was a fake, created from a hojillion save states mashed together in an emulator, and also uses the "? box to go through wall trick" which is not allowed. The 11:11 video is real, and although less flashy is still done really well.

Other than bosses yeah. I got the Ice Shreikbats no problem. It's just a matter of figuring out what I don't have that presents the problem. Also trying to find that 8th power bomb expansion is going to be a bitch because before I thought there was only 7. Even the Item guide I got didn't have an 8th bomb on it. So that wigged me out realizing that I had 7 power bombs knowing of one in Phendrana's Edge hadn't been retrieved yet. I'm pretty sure I got it in Phendrana Drifts though. Problem is the Pirate occupied portions of Phrendrana scare the fuck out of me because I'm easily scared like that. And please don't even MENTION the Phazon Mines. I HATE going there and I don't know why. :cry

A few months ago I got a master materia set for each character, on top of boosting everyone to level 99. Although I did use a PS Emulator, which means i let it run loose at 200fps, so that's somewhat cheating I guess.

Boosting stats to 255 in FFVII doesn't take that long.

FFVIII, on the other hand...

I did. :mz2
But not the new upgrade. Haven't even played that. :<

Also, beat Halo on Legendary, which is pretty tough.

I considered using Devour to make max stats in FFVIII, but thats just painfully long.

I did get everyone to fill in the whole sphere grid in FFX though (although none of that "erasing +1 spheres and making them +4" bullshit), and it actually didn't take that long at all. You get so many sphere levels later on you don't know what to do with them. Then you just go to the monster arena, fight that one wolf, and use the dispenser of your choice on him for 90 spheres you want. The whole process takes about 10 hours tops to have everyone fill in the entire sphere grid.

I'm currently starting Disc 2 in my FFVIII No Junction game - in the prison. Since I'm a sucker for punishment, I opted to fight Brothers just for the hell of it. Those guys are pretty damn hard when you have no healing source, and have to get in as many limit breaks as you can before each character is killed off one at a time. It took about 8 or 9 retries, but Zell finally got the godly 12 second Duel on the small Minotaur, and all was well. :E
The Iguions were kinda tricky as well since you just have Squall and Irvine, but Shotgun Ammo makes them your bitch.
I think a tricky situation is coming up (and one that will likely require a few save files). Once you split the parties up for the missile base / garden segments, you have to live with those choices for a pretty large portion of the game and there are several hard boss battles in each. I will have to see what members I want in each team....I also don't know if the BF12F tank thing is going to be harder than the Oilboyles or not. Whatever one is harder will get Zell, but if I send Zell to the missile base I don't get him back for the second tank battle, and there is the fight with T-Rexaur and Norg as well...

Ugh. Well, I'll have to figure it out and keep a saved game right before the party split up.

Garbo, when Solidus loses his extra arms and starts charging do you move around or stand still? It's a lot easier to just hold guard and stand still and just turn to face him as he charges at you.

no I'm really not joking

she's playing FF9 for the second time right now for some reason
just because it's the only FF she hasn't played more than once (aside from the NES ones, which she hasn't played)

edit: she's also playing four swords adventures right now when I'm not using the gamecube
