As a free thinking individual, where the big guy in the sky doesn't exist as he's explained in some poorly written book, I gave up nothing!!!
Just remember...
God gave his only begotten son...SO YOU COULD HAVE SOME FUN! Now repent tomorrow you stupid bastard! It's a free ticket!

You also appear to be a free thinking individual with interesting new ideas about sentence structure.Cybernetic Empire wrote:As a free thinking individual, where the big guy in the sky doesn't exist as he's explained in some poorly written book, I gave up nothing!!!

Actually, that's still on the rulebooks sir, although practically no one follows it. Catholics are supposed to fast every Friday, not just Fridays of Lent. I think the new rule is it's up to you what you give up, but most people just don't give up anything (I'm guilty tooDamien wrote:You fast every Friday evAer?

"WAS" being the operative word.
Actually (this isn't the case today) the early Catholic church prescribed fasting on Wednesday and Friday the year 'round. And more specifically, fasting generally went until 3PM, at the time Jesus was alleged to have died on the cross.
Today, there isn't really a rule per se. The pope encourages fasting, but doesn't actually say all Catholics SHOULD fast every Friday. That was one of the liberalizations that occurred in Vatican II, so now it's just a Lent thing...unless you're not feeling well, or if you're sick, or elderly, or a young child, etc etc etc.
Fasting doesn't just mean you don't eat for a day. It's that you reduce the number of meals you have as well as avoiding certain foods (i.e. red meat, eggs, dairy, etc.). As I understood it, fasting involved eating two small meals during the day, and was a means of spiritual purification as well as a kind of sacrifice.
Now I continue the practice of fasting mostly because the religion I belong to prescribes it as well, and it's just easier to do it on Fridays so I can get food at all the Catholic fish fries in town come Lent.
Plus, fish is

Friday was chips day with school dinners. One time, I remember this because it was the most tramatic episode of my early childhood, explains my problem with authority as well - this one time it was chips day and they were pretty fat chunky chips, and we all got one scoop each and in my scoop I got 5 chips. I stayed there for a little longer and looked at the dinner lady who just shrugged and said 'that's all'. It scarred me for life.

It isn't that you HAVE to eat fish on fridays. It's more abstaining from eating certain foods, not having to eat a particular food. So, you could go vegetarian on Fridays if you wanted to, just as long as you avoided red meat and poultry (and formerly, eggs and dairy products, though Eastern Orthodox does continue this practice as well)Calbrena wrote:Aren't we supposed to eat fish on Fridays? We used to have fish every Friday in like 100% of the schools I went to as a kid....
