Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
Guess this isn't really much of a surprise since a Vincent FFVII was hinted at about a month or two ago. I don't know what to think about this right now, but it doesn't look like anything new, just looks like fan servicing to me. Vincent was one of the more interesting characters in FFVII (even though Square pretty much neglected him completely in FFVII save for 1-2 hours of backstory). SE should keep focus on new things rather than trying to suck FFVII dry with all of these new games and the movie coming out, but I guess that's what they do best nowadays.
I dunno, the more I see, the more hope I loose. 2d is dying and no companies are putting any effort into reviving it (any REAL effort I mean). Many 3d games that are trying to appeal to a larger, mainstream crowd seem incredibly simple and seem to focus on production values rather than content. Granted there are ALOT of good games coming out this fall, so I guess change is on its way. I don't mind change for the better, but don't forget about the older genres either
"Only in the absolute stillness of the mind can truth be obtained..."
I'd rather they stick to FFnumerals, rather than FF:new name each time. That can get even more annoying. Or, if prefer they call it a new name altogether each time, I find it then difficult to pick out which SE titles will be of the highest quality they are capable of achieving in any period of time. I wouldn't want to accidentally pick up Dragon Warrior 15 renamed, thinking it was the FF equivalent.himurokoken wrote:No because FF has gotten so annoying I wish it would die. :E Or atleast stop using the numerals.fire2ash wrote:Cus FFXII doesn't seem that interesting..? Dunno
Ever since after FF8, I have never ever looked forward or highly anticipated another FF. FFX I kind of did, but once I played it I lost almost all hope.
FFXII looks really awesome, and hopefully it can revive the series for something respectable as opposed to a bunch of ghey spin offs.
My point is, I'd get tired of having to find out which games are of the highest quality SE is willing to put out, where I can just automatically assume that the next FF is their best offering. And yes, that's just me being a fanboy, but I do not enjoy any other game like I do an FF.himurokoken wrote:It's the whole division system I think. Square is divided in to divisions now. If I'm correct they are the ones who pass new game ideas to the heads of Square.
Garbo. That's a retarded point. Because all you'd have to do is research the game for a minute or two on the internet.
Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
I think perhaps the biggest fear is that they have a chance with this game to change the story of FFVII. This definately takes place before FFVII - I don't see any plausible reason to assume it takes place afterwards, since Advent Children is already doing that.
Ugh - oh God I just had a bad thought. What if Dirge IS after FFVII and Advent Children makes an alliteration to Dirge?
Something like:
Cloud: "Wow, we won. I'm glad thats all over."
Vincent: "Yes. Now, I must go and take care of some other business."
Vincent walks off, and it has like a promo shot of Dirge.

The scary thing is that I wouldn't put this past SE to actually do...

Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
It just doesn't sound too appealing at the moment no matter which way they take it. I might try the game just to give it a shot since it does give a chance to find out a little more about the FFVII hopefully since parts of it were kind of vague. Then again sometimes its better to just wonder and to never know what really happened, kind of ruins the whole story and effect the game originally had.

Actually,Ii think the interest in Vincent maybe sptrings from the fact thathe plays so minor a role in the game. He's an optional character, but unlike Yuffie, his history suggests that he SHOULD play an important role in the story. The fact tha he doesn't leaves something to be desired....and he has a cool character design.

I’m going to reserve judgment for until I play the game. I loved VII through X and am not about to automatically assume anything from SE anytime soon is going suck automatically.

I absolutely love FFX and FFX2. I don't have any problem with games like those coming out. But with the amazing success of Final Fantasy XI and the aformentioned two games sales', plus the merger with Enix has me in serious doubt that Square is really still running in the red after Final Fantasy: TSW.thirdchildren wrote:Yeah, but those games werent really big sellers, I mean I loves them too, but Square have to make money, and unfortunately that seems to involve pumping sizeable amounts of cash into second rate FF sequels and spin-offs(though I thought X-2 was far superior to X).

What ever happened to the Xenosaga's and Vagrant Story's Square? Final Fantasy has been amazing, but I like some other games as well..

instead of taking a risk on something that might not appeal to everyone and not be able to make money hats for the entire staff.

Of course it is partially about making money, that isn't even a question. I don't think that is true because they have a history of making these games in the first place. You can't just blame everything on them wanting cash, there has to be a little bit more reason behind it than just that. Everything is fueled by the desire to have something that makes money, but those are not always the only reason. The other reasons are what I want to know.

I got excited reading the thread title and thought there would be something worthwhile in here but I get this instead.
Isn't SE making a new Musashi game for the PS2?Garbo wrote:So they're in the process of making 3 spinoffs of FF7 all in quick succession.
How incredibly disappointing. In this time they could've made the next Chrono/Musashi/Threads of Fate/FF13 and 14.

Seriously though, I'm starting to worry about SE. FFXII looks good, but even it re-uses already existing worlds/themes/settings in Ivalice. All of these weird spin offs like X-2, AC, BC, and now Dirge...
Is it REALLY so hard to keep coming up with new and fresh ideas?
"We wanted to explore Ivalice more and take it farther" was one of the reasons they gave. Hey guess what? You have a game series for that already - its called Final Fantasy Tactics.
Granted it still looks better than FFX-2 was, but I suppose that has yet to be proven.

Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
I think the saddest part is that other Japanese companies who make rpgs are going down the drain as well. I used to depend on them for non Square shit but now..we got Monolithsoft with a half assed Xenosaga series. Hopefully Baten Kaitos deliver and serves us some great rpg playin'. And we also have, which I regret saying (because it's my favorite rpg series..), a stagnating Suikoden series by Konami who, like Square (atleast it seems like it), only wants to do it for the profits now and not for the fans or some twisted shit like that, and it will only continually deteriate without it's original creator or someone just as good doesn't comes along the way.
What else is there? Besides Square, that we can turn to for our Japanese rpgs? I'm not much of an American rpg fan, for one thing I don't like the art style in most of them and I also don't like the gameplay style of them either.
The only people I can count on now is Nippon Ichi.
And Konami because I trust them way more than Square.
wtf abe, I hate dragon quest. But it'd be pretty dumb to say that DWVIII doesn't look better than it's predecessors. It's no longer fugly and it doesn't have a fap happy first person mode battle system.
And that has nothing to do with this thread you nub.

Exactly!
I'm still appalled at how he can hate on Star Ocean like that. Those games are fun.

Excellent. I'd rather make it shallow and cliché than overly long and cliché beyond death, while trying at being deep, yet miserably failing to do be deep, and just ends up being like the previous 99499349499349 japanese rpgs you've played.Joei wrote:You can count on Nippon Ichi for shallow storylines.
Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
Don't make this another Xenosaga hate thread. This is a Square Enix hate thread.
I wasn't referring to XS... in particular anyway.
I don't mind a minimalistic approach to the storylines. I fail to see why it should be the biggest factor that would make an RPG 'good'. Sure good storyline helps, but as far as I'm concerned, it's just icing on the cake.
But those that are taking minimalist approach to their storylines at least know that their story-writing is not that great, and instead of shoving it up our throats, they just make it simpler.

Hmm. I might give American rpgs a chance...
I'll have to check out Fable and KOTOR...

HKK: I'd start with Kotor, but I'm going through Planescape Torment right now, and it has to be one of the most original stories in a game I've ever encountered. The writing's much better than the assy translations we're used to as well. Battle dynamics are shitty, but everything else is top-notch.
Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
It doesn't to me.
Because some of the better rpgs I've played have cliche'd stories but have awesome awesome gameplay. And you don't care about the story, but it's good enough to draw you in (Star Ocean and Tales come to mind).
Alright Ward. Since I don't have a xbox, I'll buy it for pc.

Stories is everything!!!111.... when you're reading a novel, watching TV, or watching a fucking anime.

Yeah I don't understand how some people can hate on a rpg just because the story is bad when the gameplay is addicting as hell (for example: serge aka abe).
When I play an rpg, good gameplay is a requirement. If it does not have good gameplay I cannot stand it and will refuse to play it. The only excepion to this was Xenosaga episode I, I have no fucking idea why I beat that game..
