I did. Quite a bit (10 total train trips). This is only my second frecciarossa (fast) train though. Most of the trains I took were regional.

My plane is delayed by over an hour and a half and now there's almost no chance of making my connecting flight. It was a slightly over 2 hour layover, but that would put me likely as landing after boarding or late in the boarding process. So I thought it was "unlikely" and pushing it close before they told me I also have to get my checked bags and go through customs at JFK. I'm like wondering by if these gate agents have ever gone through customs in US before. I'd have been worried about the 2 hour layover even without plane delay if I knew I had to do customs in JFK instead of DC. It's stupid even. What if the connecting flight were to another country and you weren't going out of the airport into the US at all? Anyway basically no chance of getting my flight unless my plane lands much earlier than currently expected, because customs alone will take more than the time between the expected landing and takeoff of the next plane. Plus I've got to collect my checked bag in JFK apparently for customs. That's also usually something that takes a good bit of time. In spite of this they're just telling me I can get another flight "if" I miss the connecting one. That's pretty much a foregone conclusion so they should just schedule it already.

It's not Italy I'm gonna be stuck in though. It's the wrong place in the US. Albeit due to a delayed flight in Italy. But also because US customs is a pain. To be fair though, I've never had to fly to a different city to get back from Heathrow (because Heathrow was my layover).

Yeah. Probably the only way. From now on. Even under the best circumstances, layovers are the worst. If you're not super rushed and stressed about making the connection, you're probably gonna be waiting around way too long. There's no perfect layover time because too many factors are unpredictable.
