Yoko Kanno Tribute Thread

Post by Doom »

Actually, I want to know if there are any Kanno albums that I'm not aware of... but let's get started.

Anime (not in any particular order)
Cowboy Bebop - no comment needed
Vision of Escaflowne - ditto
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - a lot of people say that the music is good in the show but not outside of it, I beg to differ but whatever
Wolf's Rain - this soundtrack keeps climbing the list of my favorites every time I listen to it
Macross Plus - solid (for a Kanno work, which means routinely excellent)
Arjuna - one of the weaker ones I've heard... which means "only" quite good
Brain Powerd - have it, haven't seen the show, therefore haven't listened to it
Turn A Gundam - ditto... actually I don't have it either :(
Memories (Magnetic Rose)
Various OP/ED
??? (am I missing anything?)

Games
Uncharted Waters I and II - great stuff
Nobunaga's Ambition Record of Military Affairs

Misc
23ji no Ongaku
Mizu no Onna
Song to Fly
The Other Side of Midnight

If anyone knows of other Kanno works (not just OP/ED)... plz 2 list (and send)!

I think that for Bebop it's the opposite.

The musics rox outside of the anime and sucks in it.

And yes I'm serious.

It’s nice how most of her songs, if not all, stand great on themselves. The only problem is that sometimes the quality of the series limits the popularity of the song.

Well, Sakamoto doesn't do much writing (a minimal amount). like 95% of the composition is Kanno, and usually they both perform in them. So it's not a straight comparison really...

They are both grand! :D

Please Save My Earth ! :love
When I got interested in those OVA (in my early anime years...), was the first time I ever heard about Yoko Kanno and her music (2nd time must have been Macross Plus, and 3rd time Escaflowne...). She didn't compose all the tracks of the OST, though. But the music is pretty sweet, especially the main theme, sung by a very soft, feminine voice (and I really recommend the OVA as well :kitty)

Here are some interesting links :
http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/dis ... =psme_ost1
http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/dis ... =psme_ist2
http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/dis ... =psme_ist3

I think she also did a little bit of the "Record of Lodoss War" OVA soundtrack (which is pretty nice too. Those CDs must be some of the first anime OST I ever bought)
This is somewhat 0ld Sch00l, classic stuff, and probably less impressive/original than her later works, but sounds good none the less, IMO.

Apart from that, there was also a little bit of Clamp stuff, like X or Card Captor Sakura, I think... (but I don't know much about those)

I remember I saw/heard it confirmed by a reliable source a few years ago... I'll try to find some stuff about that again and post it here though =/

Oh, and I have a Turn A Gundam CD, I can tell you you don't miss anything, it's not as good as her other OSTs.

My favs: :D
-Bebop (both good in and out imo)
-Magnetic Rose
-Esca

PSME is not that bad... The music is kinda like Macross + to me, not better nor worse.
And the manga is :check (OAVs...Well, it's only like 4, 5vols. out of 18 or something, so... =/)

The biggest problem I have with the OST is that there are some tracks I can't even remember ever hearing in the anime :nerv
That weird song, for instance O_o :
http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/dis ... st2/15.mp3

But most of the Yoko Kanno tracks are a lot like the ones she did for Macross +, indeed :
http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/dis ... st3/01.mp3
http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/dis ... st3/10.mp3

Rather ambient stuff, fits well in the anime, maybe less interesting to hear outside of context ?

The sweet song that play during the credits :} :
http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/dis ... st1/08.mp3
http://jameswong.com/ykproject/disc/dis ... st3/16.mp3

Anyway, I really recommend the anime. And the manga even more.

I need Wolfs Rain OST bad!

Kanno is onre of my favorite overall composers of all time. There is little work of hers I don't like, some of her more risque vocals for example. Her ability to capture incredible emotion through her works is almost unbelievable at times. Just listen to Escaflowne :)

Escaflowne OST 0wnz m3.
Strings + Choir = :love :love :love

One of the things that really impress me is that it's totally different from the other things she's done (same thing for Bebop)

I'm fairly certain Kanno had no part in the Record of Lodoss OAV OST otherwise I would have remembered something like that being the Yokko Kanno whore that I am. :p
I know she did music for a Dreamcast game and Maaya Sakamoto did the theme to that game but for the life of me I cannot remember the title of the game. I have the OST to the game so I'll look it up when I get back home today.
Yoko Kanno also did a CD for the X series but it was a character image album or something like that. There's also some misc. stuff like composing songs for Maaya Sakamoto for various anime themes and CD's.

I found a dozens of sites in French and English saying that Kanno and Gabriela (or Gabriella) Robin was the same person, but none of them could 100% confirm it. (though in one biography it was listed as a fact, not as a maybe... :erm)
Though I'm sure I read something about that from a reliable source a few years ago... =/

Anyway, here is one of the sites, not a 'real' site but the arguments are interesting...

http://www.geocities.com/helixcat_2000/robin.html

Doom (or anyone, he just seems to have the biggest mp3 collection :p), do you have that 'Aqua Colors in Paris' album? the sample on the site doesn't work, so... =/

Anyway, all these arguments are not convincing but 1# to 4# are interesting, especially 3 and 4 if someone could check that....

Reminds me of that Sharon Apple/Myung plot twist in Macross + ;)

Apparently Yoko Kanno is a crazy, crazy broad who likes to play tricks. I wouldn't be surprised at all if she really wasn't Japanese and was just wearing a mask.

Good. If you or someone else does end up making it and decides to compress it, compress each album as a seperate rar so cool kids who use azureus like me can choose not to download albums we already have.

Has anyone even tried out the tracker yet?

I MAY do it if people promise to fucking seed the thing after they get it so I won't be stuck on it for a month.

The problem is if you're going to be a bitch like Dave and want .rars... do you realize how much extra space that will take up on my computer? :x

1.) There's like 10 torrents on the tracker right now.

2.) I've been seeding eurobeat.org torrents for about 6 months now.

3.) I didn't say I WANTED rars I said if you WANT TO DO RARS make sure they're SEPERATED so I don't have to redl all of CB OST.

Kanno only worked on the opening theme since Maaya Sakamoto did the vocals.

I seriously doubt, unless it has the same theme as Trigun, that I would enjoy it nearly as much. :p

Also, I admit I'm being a fanboy. Kanno's music is technically better, I just prefer Trigun's music due to the context.

Actually, there are undeniable hints of Trigun-ish themes in Gungrave, but Gungrave is definitely distinct enough to stand on its own and (I'll say it again) I felt that overall Gungrave was far superior! :E
