Don’t buy these games, they’re much too violent!

Post by Kokaku »

‘tis the season, the season of pointing out how much everything else sucks.

Image
The games the group singled out as the year's "Worst Violent Video Games" (at bottom of the page) are all rated "M" for Mature by the ESRB and are not supposed to be sold to children under 17. Besides containing Postal 2 and Manhunt, which both came out in 2003, the list also misspelled and misidentified a number of games, including "Gunslinger Girls 2"--presumably the import Gunslinger Girl Vol. 3--and Hitman: Blood Money, which won't be out until spring of 2005. The list also contained Shadow Hearts, which was released in 2001. Presuming the group meant Hitman: Contracts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant, respectively, the rest of the coalition's list consisted of: Doom 3, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, and Mortal Kombat: Deception (which the group spelled as "Mortal Combat"). (from GameSpot)
Here's the full statement from the idiots who made it… http://www.iccr.org/news/press_releases ... 112304.htm

At least they were nice enough to provide a list of non-violent games…

1. Antigrav
2. EyeToy:Antigrav
3. Jak 3
4. Karaoke Revlution Vol. 3
5. Madden NFL 2005
6. Mario Power Tennis
7. Prince of Persia
8. RollerCoaster Tycoon 3
9. SimCity 4

Ahaha. That PA owns.

What's so hilarious is that they say PoP isn't violent. XD Even if it's not gory, it's violent. Hell, Sands of Time had sex shit related in it.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within however is the completely opposite. That thing is BLOODY.

Out of all the sports games to pick as non-violent, they choose football? How about a sport that doesn't involve physical contact such as golf or tennis? That's just stupid. Every year these groups release completely ignorant lists and get laughed at; making fun of them is just too easy.

Indeed. I imagine their idea of "games for appropriate age groups" is Pong til your 18. Talk about sheltering kids from the real world. Do they even realize how often they mention the parents, but not their responsibility to pay attention to what their kids are watching/playing/listening to? Obviously if my little brother goes to a store and buys a violent game it's not my parents fault if he developes violent tendancies when they were ignoring what he was doing.

At the very least this list has informed me that a company will be importing one of the Gunslinger Girls game. :E Other than that the list is a pile of garbage as expected.

The whole argument about game violence is so flawed. I studied it as part of my degree and what it basically comes down to is that as games get better graphics they become more realistic and therefore more impressionable, apparently. There's no true evidence though because games are always changing. I think you have to be pretty impressionable (and stupid) to let a game influence you enough to make you act violently...

Hmm, I don't mean to defend these hysterical parents group regurlarly demanding to "ban these evil games", yet it's true young children (let's say, under 10) can be pretty impressionable (and stupid? well, technically speaking, their brains aren't fully developped yet, so...)
But obviously it's the parent's responsibility to assess they're kids mental maturity and make sure they don't get exposed to "inappropriate material" (or, even better, discuss with them said "inappropriate material" so that the kids don't get "inappropriate ideas"), IMO.

Maybe "stupid" was the wrong word, naive might have been better. But I think the problem starts with kids having games rated 18, it is the parents overlooking game ratings. It's silly that parents will take a stand on 18 rated films and they won't so much with games which are interactive and require the child to not just be subjected to violent imagery but adopt the mindset to create it.

Actually I listened to it for an entire day at work XD
But I didn't comment on it right away, because I couldn't understand all the lyrics :heh

This reminds me...
The other day (well, when I went skiing a few weeks/months ago, actually) I went in a cybercafe to check my emails, and there was a really young kid (maybe 6 or 7?) there, playing(?) a real-time war simulation game set in a realistic environment : looked like a desert, with palm trees, rocky/sandy moutains, and dark-skinned refugees hiding under tents. The kid was actually too young to understand the aim of the game (which seemed to be : shoting the armed bad guys, and not the helpless refugees), and was just shoting at anything that moved. No blood, but still a bit shocking (looked too much like the evening news, probably :()
... Yet I remember playing a game on the Master System involving piloting an helicopter, saving hostages and killing terrorists, in which I would sometimes kill the hostages on purpose, because they were so bloody stupid and annoying, so... :heh

Talking of roller coaster accidents...
Final Destination 3 is coming out and the accident at the beginning is going to involve a roller coaster.
Yeaaaah man. Anyway, back to violent games, I think Rockstar have caused the biggest stir recently. Although Resident Evil 4 is pretty nasty in places.

Oddly enough, this is one of the games that came to mind.
I always thought Mortal Kombat games were pretty violent with the fatalities and all. But nowadays, that's nothing.

I guess I would have to go with Manhunt for the most gruesome. :check
