I can imagine Saki cosplaying as Millia in later eps though she would need longer hair.

Re: Ongoing Anime Discussion (now with October 2004)
GUILTY GEAR DAY!
I just watched the raw for Akane Maniax ep 1. Pretty funny stuff. Yes it's a comedy, with much-appreciated references to KGNE thrown in (ep 2 preview seems to showcase Haruka), but it's basically a comedy, and works pretty well. The art is different (Akane seems to have gone down 5 cup sizes), but still quite serviceable. I'm eager to watch this subbed.
Re: Ongoing Anime Discussion (now with October 2004)
gankutsuou is very stylish and i really like the cinematography. Definitely a real classy and futuristic tale of revenge.
I liked this as much as I loved King of Bandit JING in Seventh Heaven.
Watching the 1st ep. opening of genshiken came as a shock. I was like, "What the hell is this? kubijiki Unbalance? Hey, is this some sort of mistake?"
Thank God, I didn't spend 2+ hours downloading some wrong anime.
The 2nd ep.'s ending is
"Hey, your girlfriend is noisy. Go and kiss her to shut her up..." :O
I'm only up till ep. 03 of Rozen Maiden and Mai-HiME but so far everything looks good. Nothing to complain.
IMO, gakuen Alice reeks of kodocha. Not recommended for cheetahs and non-mahou fans alike.
gokigenyou. I finished 1st season of Maria-sama and now I'm up to ep. 10 of Spring. A great series. Personally, I would have preferred lililicious' ver. of Spring but it seems like they only have 1 ep. of it.
Wasn't Cromartie up till 26? I've finished downloaded all that's available from DO's ftp and I have to say that J.C. Staff is definitely getting lazier and lazier. But nothing beats Brocolli's DiGi Charat. Oh well... "Happy Birthday omae~"
For now, I'm catching up on Kaleido Star.

Finally saw Innocence. Excellent film, and nowhere near as mind numbing as I thought it would be.
I question what happened to the Major, but maybe that links to the series somehow (of which I haven't finished obviously).
Ridicously good looking film too, in all aspects. What a superb style.

My friend's DVD ver. of GITS Innocence really sucked. The quality was below average and the subs were downright horrible. I'll give it another chance later, though I'm quite sure that SAC > Innocence.Originally posted by Leftover

Gakuen Alice eh... I was pretty indifferent about that one. y 2 magic girl?![]()
Re: Ongoing Anime Discussion (now with October 2004)
A friend gave me Innocence in mkv format, so the quality was delicious good.
I'm sure other folks here have it, possibly even DO, who can maybe put it up for you.
The visuals make all the difference.

Re: Ongoing Anime Discussion (now with October 2004)
Innocence is a great movie and a lot better than the first but it still doesn't compare to the tv series. The characterization is a whole lot better in the tv series but that's to be expected. I just like Innocence for the visuals and the sheer fact that it focuses on Bateu.
Mai-Hime episode 8 was great. I definitely like the ending to that episode as it took me off guard and raises the show on a better level. At that point I was thinking that Mai-Hime would be an average anime with everything following a formula.

Episode 8 was definately great, my favorite of the series so far. Episode 9 looks to be another fanservice episode though...

Re: Ongoing Anime Discussion (now with October 2004)
What's it about?
In an unrelated note, I went back and watched the last episode of FMA again, and I took note of two important names mentioned. Haushofer (Ed's dad was having a conversation with him) and Oberth (mentioned by Ed).
Haushofer was apparently a big influence on Hitler and was a theorist of Nazi geopolitics. Oberth is looked at being one of the three founding fathers of rocketry and modern astronautics.
I don't see what geo politics has to do with alchemy though. Hmm.
Quite the extremes, no?
:>

Could Count of Monte Cristo be the perfect anime ;_;?
Re: Ongoing Anime Discussion (now with October 2004)
FMA is closer to the perfect anime than anything. Anyway, is there a subbed DVD Rip out of Innocence that I can get anywhere? I should probably do the same for the rahxephon movie.

Me too.

Me too.

lmao @ Garbo
Anyway, saying something like "perfect" carelessly won't amount to much. In the case of anime, or for that matter all forms of media that facilitates visual storytelling, what "perfect" means is pretty iffy.
But for the sake of argument, let's suppose that it represents an ideal combination of all of the conventional elements and criteria on which we would normally judge a series. So this means we can break it down into:
- visuals (art, animation)
- sound (music, voice acting)
- plot (obviously)
- character development/drama (the primary thrust of which is usually, but not always, some sort of romance)
- comedy (the yin to drama's yang, but there are shows that handle both extremely well)
- action (not necessarily tons of gun/sword action... but enough kinetics to provide a bit of flair and to grab the attention of the average viewer)
- strong themes (so the viewer gets something out of it)
So let's say that the "perfect" anime has to excel in every single of these areas, striking a good balance between drama and comedy. Every single show that most fits the bill that I can think of off the top of my head comes up relatively short in at least one category. However, they do an extremely good job with whatever isn't mentioned, imo.
FMA - admittedly extremely close; the only thing I can say against it is that the soundtrack, while good, is stiffed by comparisons to Kanno music, for example
Kenshin OVA 1 - absolutely deadly serious
Now and Then, Here and There - same, with a little less action
Grave of the Fireflies - same, with even less action
Gankutsuou - light on action (for the time being... waiting on those mechs), no comedy
Planetes - lacks standout visuals/sound and light on action... otherwise great
GTO - well... it's formulaic to a point, and the animation/music aren't the greatest
Fruits Basket - relatively sparse plot, again not much action
Bebop - plot issues
GitS SAC - characters are driven by the plot, and it's a bit heady... and that's about it; while the story is broken up, the setting is so enriched by the stand-alone episodes that it doesn't matter
Last Exile - story doesn't come together as perfectly as it could have... some character issues, not really heavily thematic
Wolf's Rain - unconventional presentation of story, somber
Macross Plus - not much comedy, but that's about it
Macross Zero - same, characters aren't as good as in Plus though
SDF Macross - dated visuals, not really a comedy, questionable anticlimax
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro - extremely hard to say anything against... again, maybe non-stellar music, but otherwise, wow
Miyazaki movies - very well-rounded but I wouldn't say that they're necessarily the best of the best except in terms of creativity and art/animation
ROD OVA - pretty thin substance-wise, but it IS powered by high production values, breakneck pacing, and an extremely high level of energy, so it stands as an exception
Juuni Kokki - I think "incomplete" is the most fitting term here
Crest of the Stars saga - same
Escaflowne - also extremely close... maybe if you're not a fan of the art? also, some of the plot devices you just have to accept and move on
RX/Eva - not much to say against them except that they pretty much fit into a specific niche (i.e. "introspective mecha")
FLCL - just... not for everyone
One show that just falls short of my putting into this category is MoO (but probably because I haven't seen it all yet).
Again, that list doesn't necessary represent my absolute personal favorites, or even what I think are the best (though yes, all of the features I listed rank high in both of those categories), but simply a good starting point to which I would point people who want to get into anime, don't know exactly what parts of it they would favor most, and want something all-encompassing to try out and get a feel for what aspects of it they decide best appeals to them, since those shows are the ones that come closest to having it all, so to speak. And having said that, I look at the beginning of this post and realized how much my point of discussion has shifted... but oh well.
Edit: holy shit that's like the longest post I've made since the last passing of Halley's Comet.
