Dragon Quest 1-3 on Switch
Dragon Quest Original Trilogy is getting an english Switch release.
That seems like the perfect opportunity to start educating myself on that franchise.

I've only played the first one, but I can say if you're looking for more to the experience than the grind, you won't get much. There's a reason I used to call it "Level Up Warrior." There are like 3 or 4 actual things to do before going to the final dungeon in that game. Most if it is just level grinding.Asaroth Larot wrote:Im not too worried, but hopefully they wont be as bad as Lufia was.

I never played Lufia, but a friend I had as a kid did, and one thing that sounded neat in theory was that Lufia begins with a sort of “final boss” fight and then jumps ahead a century or so. And then Lufia II is actually a prequel that tells the story of the characters that you briefly play as at the beginning of Lufia.
Again, I think this is cool in theory; I make no claims about the actual quality of these games.

But if you max out your level in FF, there's still an actual full game to get through, albeit an easy one. If you max out your level at the beginning of DQ, you basically just pick up 3 items and then go straight to the final boss.Damien wrote:They should have some cheats in like the Final Fantasy ports/remasters. Button that gets you to level 100 (or 30 or whatever the highest level is)
It's a little more complicated than that. It might take awhile to find some of the items for instance. The point is though that very little happens in the game, even compared to the original FF. There are basically two plot points.

Yeah I rented Lufia 2 as a kid and thought it was promising from what I remember.smeared ink wrote:I never played Lufia, but a friend I had as a kid did, and one thing that sounded neat in theory was that Lufia begins with a sort of “final boss” fight and then jumps ahead a century or so. After the shitshow that was Lufia I found out that Lufia 1 and 2 were made by two completely different creative teams. Which if I get around to trying out 2 again as an adult Im glad to hear.

Dragon Quest 2 is done.
It reminded me a lot of Final Fantasy 1 in a lot of ways. The game is structured in a very similar way where it opens up just a little bit in and then you basically go exploring and go running down leads on what youre supposed to do on townspeople comments and sometimes things can be pretty fucking obtuse.
I actually would rate this game a little higher than Final Fantasy 1. Though the cracks in the basic battle system design did start to creep in at the finish line.
Whoever thought it was a good idea to put a high accuracy full party instant death move on random encounters needs to sit down and actually suffer through their creation.
I liked it. I'll probably move onto 3 tomorrow. Im gamed the fuck out.

Dragon Quest 3 is done. I didnt like it as much as 2 but thats purely a my own superficial tastes thing.
The game itself is probably straight up objectively better than 2 and features a lot of welcome gameplay fixes. Mages can actually get stronger thanks to the Intelligence stat now being a thing and you dont have to fuck around with item management as much thanks to a new infinite holding bag. Before it was like Suikoden 1 where you only have as much space as you have character's item pages and everything had to be swapped in and out of a specific character's page to use.
