DUNE: The Good Version

Post by Fei Ayanami »

So as anyone who is likely to care about a new Dune movie knows, there is a new Dune movie being made. And it’s being directed by Québecois superstar Denis Villeneuve! I think he did an amazing job on the Blade Runner sequel, so I have pretty high hopes here.

I am very fond of David Lynch’s Dune from 1984, and it has a lot going for it (cast, art direction, music), but it’s got a crap screenplay which unfortunately is an important thing to get right, so that makes it pretty bad.

Casting for the new movie keeps trickling out. The latest is Josh Brolin as Gurney (Patrick Stewart in 1984 version). Some of the other ones are Timothée Chalomet as Paul (Kyle MacLachlan in 1984), Oscar Isaac as Paul’s dad Duke Leto (Jürgen Prochnow in 1984), Zendaya as Chani (Sean Young in 1984), and Javier Bardem as Stilgar (Everett “Big Ed” McGill in 1984). That’s not everyone that’s been announced.

Anyone hopeful for this? Fans of the book? Fans/haters of the old movie?

There’s talk of splitting the story into two (or even three??) movies, which I kind of hope doesn’t happen. But if it does, they’d better do it well!

You are wrong about Dune 1984. It is awful.

I liked the game Dune 2 and also when it was remade and called Dune 2G

I love the first four books. After that. Well.....they get pretty bad.

The RDM did not read or see any version of Dune, but he's been sort of vaguely planning to read it for like two decades.

I literally rented Dune last Friday... I haven't watched it yet. I guess I'll let you know my thoughts after I see it.

I haven’t read the book since I was a teen and I coincidentally read it back to back with the English Patient, and both books involved a lot of details about survival in the desert. Recommended double feature books!

I also never played any Dune games. People enjoyed... “Dune 2000”...?

EDIT: Seems the earlier “Dune II”, which Dune 2000 is a pseudo-remake of, is the one people really like.

I might read the book again soonish. I keep hearing that it naturally splits into three parts and would thus work as three films, but I definitely don’t remember it well enough to have any sense of that, and I’m worried that even two films is a bad idea.

Hans Zimmer is composing the soundtrack.
This is either a good thing or a forgettable mediocre thing.

I dunno exactly what Hans Zimmer’s contributions to Blade Runner 2049 were, but that had a good soundtrack.

And let’s not forget MGS. :E

Hans Zimmer is a decent composer, I’m not sure what Waward has against him. Also, we can thank him for helping Ramin Djawadi in his early career.
