HDTV? yes, no, or whatever?

Post by Entr0pi3 »

Anyone paying a little bit of attention to the home electronics market must have noticed how Sony and Microsoft are using the next-gen console market as a battleground to enforce their respective new DVD standards (BlueRay VS HD-DVD) - placing the focus on HDTV support in the process, since this is what these new formats are all about, it seems : not placing more hours of content on a disc, but rather higher-res content.
Meanwhile, Nintendo chose to totally ignore HDTV for now (I think they officially announced the Revolution wouldn't support it)

Now, what I wonder is : how many people do actually own an HDTV? I'd be tempted to say "not too many right now" - maybe because there is little high-res content available.
But how many people will be really eager to invest in a HD system when such a content (like video games) becomes more widely available? "Many", Microsoft and Sony seems to be betting on (creating new [s]needs[/s] markets is their job, after all).
However, I know that personally, I won't be investing in a HDTV anytime soon
(my TV works perfectly fine, and the HDTV systems price is too high for my taste. Moreover, I won't be investing in a DVD player that can only play one of the two standards, which means I'll have to wait for players compatible with both to come out - unless one of the standards dies quickly)
So, what about you guys?

HDTV is really too expensive to be worth investing in right now for anyone I think. Sure, when the technology becomes cheaper and more widely available yeah I'll probably invest in it. But right now all you really get with HDTV is something to brag to your friends and strangers about.

Not I.

Resolution hasnt become a big deal to me, Im content with the standard. Even when I sold them (hdtv's) at Sears, I never jumped into the hype. If someone seemed interested I just turned a movie on and let them make their own decision w/out trying to close on them.

I am more of a screensize whore than anything else. :E

you play videogames on that thing Brody?

I have an HD
I love it

I tried going back to normal after having one after my first HD had problems
But I just couldnt stop paying attention to the scanlines

also I think the picture may just be better period on HD

Though for some games it's kinda "too good"

Nice projector screen :check
A friend of mine has one, says you can play console games (like, FFX) perfectly fine on that thing, because the resolution is similar to what you have on a standard TV screen.
However, he said you can't really, for instance, use that as a computer screen, to process text or shit like that, because the resolution is too low (lower than 640x480, I think)

In theory, I certainely don't think HDTV is a bad idea (although I'm not sure one really can make the difference when looking at it from several meters - computer screens have high res because you sit like less than 50 cm from them, while TV is usually meant to be watched from much farther, where you can't see the scan line), but the added value/current price ratio seems too low to me right now. + the BlueRay VS HD-DVD issue make me really unconfortable (I hope DVD players compatible with both will be released soon, and at a decent price). I'll probably get a HDTV some time in the future, but it looks very premature to me right now.
Now I don't blame people who already own one, coz I'll probably ask for their advice when I finally make a buying decision ;)

Yes, video games and movies are wonderful in 85''. :D

I was planning on buying a bigscreen like say around 50-60'' but I was having a tough time throwing up that kind of cash (1500+) on a television I wasnt totally happy about. Once I came across the projector option I thought it was perfect. Only 7 lbs, huge screen, standard resolution (if you stand inches from the screen, you can see distortion, but sitting back at a normal viewing distance it looks really good), plus its cheaper than the bigscreens i was looking at. :)

My only quip was not figuring out a way to connect my laptop and get a good resolution. If you know of any possible way to hook it up and get good resolution let me know. Ive seen it done before, but not in my situation. I figured the difference between classrooms projectors and mine is the lcd/dlp classification. Not sure exactly.

EDIT: these are the inputs i have to work with.

I don't even know if I'll be "investing" in a next gen console. I certainly won't dump money on HD.

HDTVs are just a fad. Bring VHS back! Fancy HD tech nearly can't get blur, static, and jumpy video as well.

I was pretty true to this. I did get a PS3 but not until 2013 and that was also the first time I got an HDTV. I guess I could feel kind of dumb about that because PS4 came out just a little after that, but I still got a pretty decent amount of use out of my PS3.

Seems that HD was here for good. 4K and the like will probably be the ephemeral fads though. Gotta find something to make people buy new TVs every few years.

This thread is weird and makes 2005 feel like a really long time ago.

I didn't have my own HDTV until 2009. I played my first year of Xbox 360 and PS3 on CRT TVs. I remember wanting an HDTV so the text in HD games would be easier to read :heh

Is 2013 a long time ago? I guess it's semi almost approaching a long time ago...a medium long time ago. Maybe just a medium time ago would be a better way to state it.
