I work for software company doing boring computer shit. We have an app for reading newspapers and magazines. I also have a videography businesss I started last year which is starting to pick up, called Shot by a Ninja (shotbyaninja.com). These days, I no longer get randomly approached by people asking if I'm Grey Fox from Square Gamer. Unless it's by Ziggy.
What do you do?

I sit in front of the computer, watch anime or play videogames. Living the NEET dream.
Unfortunately, occasionally monetary issues forces me to get a job. Usually I sit behind the counter in a store which sells third-party printer supplies. A few months a year is enough to supply me for a year of rent, food and internet. What more can a man need?

Seriously? I guess you live pretty frugally, but still seems pretty awesome to me that you only need to work a few months to make enough for a year.Slashley wrote:I sit in front of the computer, watch anime or play videogames. Living the NEET dream.

Frugal is a keyword. I'm a small man, I eat only a little. There's also much faster broadband available, but I'm still chugging with my trusty old ASDL because it is cheaper.Lord Golbez wrote:Seriously? I also lucked out by getting an apartment from my grandmother. Which means I never had to get mortgage, or pay a huge rent to whoever actually owns the place. I only have to pay my small piece of the... what do you call it in English, I wonder. My cut of the building's maintenance.
And I've never robbed the till. Are you nuts?
Getting caught doing that for some small change will get you nothing but trouble!

Hey now, 10 years ago I had a stable job! How do you think I had the money to visit Vancouver! ... that was in 2008, I think? And 2010? I don't think I saw you in 2010.Grey Fox wrote:So basically Slashley is doing exactly what he was doing 10 years ago.

Anyway, nowadays... after giving post-doc research a try for a while - till I ran out of funding
(and willingness to work my ass off for a pittance in a thanklessly precarious job market
)
I'm now
(after a somewhat fruitless self-employed lapse - combined with numerous life changes such as relocation, babies and so on)
happily employed full-time as a software engineer for a mediumish-sized tech company.
A bit more dull, but far less stressful and much better paid, so works for me!

The RDM works for the State of New York (the court system) making computers do computer things better than they do already. That's after eight years of banging his head against a wall for a defense contractor who never wanted anything to be made better ever because change is scary.
And the RDM has two kids who are the best and a wife who is pretty good too and too many dogs and cats and cars for some reason.
He also rarely speaks in third person these days, even on the Internet.

Good for you! I wish I had done the same and wasted a lot less of my life on a worthless PhD I don't really care about.smeared ink wrote:I'm in the process of quitting a PhD program (physics) because I am done done done with academia. I have a decent shot at a non-academic job as a "data scientist". But I shan't speak of it further right now because it might not happen!

Being able to work from home is awesome, I'm glad there are so many opportunities to work remotely these days.smeared ink wrote:Yep, if I get this particular job, which is based in Toronto, I'll be able to work from home in Montreal (which we'd like in the short term, since Montreal is great) but have some flexibility in where we live too.

How many kids btw and what ages?
My company pretends they encourage working from home, but they really don't. One person in my office travels 3 hours there and 3 hours back each day to sit at a computer that's connected to every other computer in the world, including the ones in his house.

That sucks.
By the way, in order to plan for your move to Manchester, have you considered looking for jobs which can specifically be done remotely?
And yeah, I love having a commuting time of roughly 30 seconds. I'm considering eventually renting a desk at a nearby co-working space though, since luckily this opportunity exists here in Brooklyn.
