Talk about anything here that there isn't another specific forum for. General chit-chat between the SG regulars. The Moderators will be sad pandas if you spam... too much.
The first time was in 2005, before LPTPW. The second time I did it did get mentioned there, though. I forgot I sent him actually good stuff, like Vermont maple syrup.
I think everyone has their own memories of things from the old times. I have a horrible memory so I can’t remember a lot of the interactions that weren’t in person. My memories are more behind the scenes type things and with people I met up with in real life. Ultimately I ended up spending more time with the great friends I met through this forum in real life than i did working on SG, and that was kind of it’s downfall from being super huge. I used to think if I’d been smarter at the time I would have worked harder on it and it would still be big or bigger, but looking at the state of the internet today where everything is either Social media sites, Reddit, or big corporate owned sites, I highly doubt that would be the case. I’m pretty happy with how Damien has kept this little slice of the internet alive as it is.

Hi Sara. Stick around this time?
@Shaun, although they're not that common, there *are* some forums that still make money. The fact that Square games became rubbish means the site couldn't have grown further or retained a big user base though.
I think Sara's probably too busy with school work right now to show up again for at least awhile, but maybe I'm just going for being wrong a third time.

Which forums? I’m guessing you’re referring to Something Awful, which is an anomaly in that it’s a gigantic forum that’s even charged for subscription (not sure if it does that still, or if it’s still about even). The internet can’t sustain too many of these in the age of Reddit and social media though.
While the subject of Square games may be pretty narrow, I disagree that people are somehow put off due to the quality of the games. Final Fantasy XIV is arguably the/one of the best games Square have ever made and certainly the most worthy of discussing, sharing anecdotes and building a community around. If The Flame Wars did anything, they showed us that all in all, SG isn’t doing bad compared to other existing forums out there.

No, I wasn't thinking about SA.
I've mentioned it before, but http://www.jeuxvideo.com/forums.htm already existed back in 2000 and since then they've grown their user base steadily. I know it's in a foreign language; my point is just that the forum format in itself can still work.
Square is still too much of a niche and there was definitely a time when the games they were releasing just weren't that good. The fact that FF XIV is a good game doesn't change the very obvious fact that for many years they were just milking the FF franchise and not releasing *enough* good games to make the SG model viable.
