Sairou....again.
Is there anytime that Sairou becomes like...unavailable to recruit? like Nakula does?

It's like Chrono Cross (or rather, Chrono Cross is like Suikoden, as Suikoden had two entries out before CC was even released). Except the characters are more central to the story. Damien is kinda wrong about the majority of them being side characters. About half can be used in combat, and the other half can be used as support characters outside of battle or who have functions inside the castle.
It also depends on the game. In the first game, most of the characters are gained in side quests. In III, most of the characters are gained through the story. In V, there's about an even mix and although that means that a lot of them are used in the story, most are well fleshed out. With over 30-40 main characters relevant to the story, I still consider it to a sizable story telling achievement in games to this day.
A lot of characters have their own side quests or side storylines. Like there's some characters where it feels like there's more than what they're letting on and they're mysterious, and their stories are fleshed out in later games like Georg Prime. Or there's characters who show up from game to game who you get to see grow up because of the series has a linear timeline (at least from I=III) like with Futch and his dragon Bright. You literally get to see Futch go from boy to man as you progress the series, which is really cool.
Even cooler is that the games all take place in a single world, with each game taking place in a different area of the world as they expand upon series history, lore, and places. You'll hear of places hinted one game, and go there the next game. Or you'll hear of places having a different culture and you never see it in that entry, which makes it feel like the world is vast and mysterious as more and more details of the world come out from game to game.
If you can't tell, I really like the series and I found it to be unique in games in its approach to story telling, especially for an RPG series, that I think to this day, is kind of unmatched. Other games have tried to mimic it like the aforementioned Chrono Cross, but nothing has really filled the void for me since it died.
Easily my favorite RPG series.
Really good article on the more cherished game in the series if you're interested.

My wishlist for a Suikoden 3 remake:
1. Better war battle system. Suikoden 3 is by far not the worst game of the series, but it has the worst war battles, because they amount to a weird neutered regular battle system. Have one more inspired by Suikoden 2 and Suikoden 5. Especially 5, which I think has the best of these types of battles in the series.
2. World Map (preferably) or if they use the same map, let me pass through points on the map without always walking through areas. I realize that Viki becomes pointless if you do this with the kind of map Suikoden 3 has. I prefer a regular world map like in the other games of the series anyway though. If they don't want to do that. Tough shit on Viki. It's not worth ruining the game and artificially lengthening it just so she can have something worthwhile to do.
3. More game/story past the point of bringing the stars together in one castle. I've always felt that Suikoden 3 has way too much build up and not enough pay off once the game escalates into full out war. Unlike the other games of the series, the game is practically over by the time the war starts and it's basically over as soon as it's started.
My wishlist for a Suikoden 4 remake:
1. Make a new game. New plot. New characters. New battle system. You can keep the setting if you can come up with a good story set in it and don't include interminable sailing. Let's just have a new game, call it Suikoden 4, and forget the other one ever existed.
A difference between me and some fans is I don't think S4 is just bad "for a Suikoden game." I think it's a bad game, period.

There must have been something about Suikoden IV, as I managed to play it through to the lass boss (though not beat it)
From the 2005 post digs, I can see that a lot of us were obsessed with talking about it. Pretty much every game from 2005 and 2006 drew similarities to it in some way (though not in a positive way)

The only thing good / interesting about it was that Ted from Suikoden 1 was in it - and you got further insight into him.Damien wrote:There must have been something about Suikoden IV, as I managed to play it through to the lass boss (though not beat it)

It's actually pretty good. One last hurrah for you...
I also have the artbook for it. That thing is awesome.
God Damn, I miss Suikoden. used to torture myself every TGS hoping against hope that this would be the year.
I heard a rumor the pachinko market was starting to crash.
Also, konami put out an ad for new programmers and they used a bunch of classic konami characters for it including Tir McDohl.
No guarantee those hired programmers are going to work on actual games and not more pachinko bullshit though.

I would never want Nintendo to have them.Asaroth Larot wrote:I think if I had a few million dollars instead of buying some fancy ass car or yacht or way too god damn expensive house or restaurant that will just fail.
I'd try to buy the Suikoden rights off Konami then turn right around and just straight give them to Nintendo
