Not hipstery at all, but I found some Hawaiian coffee at London Drugs that was nice. Grabbed the medium roast and the vanilla-macadamia flavored one. I liked layering them in with my regular coffee for some of that nice acidic brightness that Hawaiian coffee has. Last time I bought the vanilla-macadamia one it the packaging had changed just slightly and the coffee inside didn't taste like yummy Hawaiian coffee -- it just tastes like generic flavored coffee (ie: dry and not very coffee-like). Is a very sads. ;(

I’m on day 11 of a coffee advent calendar and today’s is definitely the most unusual and fascinating so far, from a Bromont roaster called Julius.

While the rest so far (and coffees I get in general) are identified as either “washed” (coffee cherry removed before drying) or some variant of “natural” (coffee cherry left on until dried, imparting fruitier flavours), this one’s “anaerobic”. The beans are fermented in sealed containers without oxygen, from what I gather in kind of a mush of the coffee cherry fruit. These ones are from Costa Rica, which apparently is mainly where this process is being used.

It almost smells… spiced?? And tastes like that too? It’s definitely fruitier like a natural processed bean, but there is something very distinct about it, and I could tell it was different from the moment I opened the bag and smelled the beans. Highly interesting!

Just noticed the tasting notes for this coffee are “apple pie, cinnamon, cloves”. Sometimes I find these tasting notes rather fanciful, but cinnamon and cloves is dead on here.

Is that because it has cinnamon and cloves?

No! Blech.

No, it’s just flavours that arise from the fermentation process. But shockingly cinnamon-and-clove-ish ones in this case.

That's Fei's fault. Not even incidentally. It was a very deliberate page 1 canon corrupting action.

We got a $5 starbucks gift card from our department director for putting up with all the staffing shortages that they could easily fix but don't want to.

I feel that that embodies a lot that's wrong with this department. I got a cheap gift card for something I can't even use. :shrug

I don't even think $5 will cover a grande latte here. I guess for USD it might just.

My nephew is in scouts and a few times a year they do a coffee fundraiser (smart!) and my brother knows I like the Jingle Java Espresso so he got me some. :D Yum yum fundraising coffee!
