So do I. But I don't judge RPGs based on the story just because I get tired of doing battles for 50 hours.Joei wrote:No matter how great the battles, I will become tired of them. Back on topic, I cannot wait for another DMC clone. We need more. Who wouldn't want to pay full price on what can be done by 12 year old modders on PC games?

This is supposed to be money. Loads and loads of money. Bleh.
It's saddening to see Square turn into a giant bullshit machine like most other developers these days. Next we'll see Cait Sith's Super Punch Out and Tetris: Guardian Force Edition.

What is your definition then of a "hardcore" gamer? I have a friend who will play 5-6 hours of an RPG, do all the work, sit through the storyline, and then turn it off without saving, a concept that boggles my mind. There are also people who are at the arcade playing DDR nonstop, memorizing the maps with a work ethic that would again blow me away. Those are a couple of examples Doom, what is your opinion?Doom wrote:I like people who think they're hardcore gamers because they've played FF games.
A hardcore gamer is someone who doesn't flame on any consoles just because he doesn't like it.
A hardcore gamer is someone who goes for all types of games and doesn't just go for what's popular.
And sometimes a hardcore gamer is a freak person who is absolutely obsessed with games and that is all he/she ever does.

New info:
source: wandering flamethe latest issue of Japan's Jump Magazine contains first information on an action game starring FFVII vampire character Vincent Valentine. The game, Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus.
In Dirge of Cerberus, players take control of Vincent, a former member of the Turks. The game takes place a year following Advent Children, which means it follows the events of the PlayStation Final Fantasy VII. The story begins as a mysterious group called "DG" suddenly begins attack of a peaceful town, leaving only one choice for Vincent -- to fight back!
Aside from these few bits, Square Enix has revealed nothing on Dirge of Cerberus. The few screens shown of the game all appear to be from cinema sequences, with one screen showing a line of dialogue where Vincent states "The meeting place with Reeve is..." Looking strictly at the game's artwork, one may think Square Enix has taken some influence from Capcom's Devil May Cry; Dirge of Cerberus should appropriately be a vampire game, making this a reasonable choice.
A Japanese release for Dirge of Cerberus is set for 2005. It's possible that this game will make it into Square Enix's Tokyo Game Show press conference, scheduled for 9/24. We'll be back with more at that time.

Yeah, I'm starting to fizzle on this game more and more, but hopefully the relevation of some story will get my interest.
I think a hardcore gamer could be someone who just seriously plays nothing but one game - I have friends who do nothing but play some racing games, or who do nothing but play some fighting games all of the time. Those guys are hardcore, even though they have lives outside of gaming. I don't think I'm all that hardcore because I barely play games at all anymore, except for a few.

I tend to drift in and out of being "hardcore". Last winter all I did was play Resident Evil games non-stop for 3 months. I covered every game in the series(the mainstream ones, not the gun survivor BS) at least twice. I also had a Metroid phase where I played through each game numerous times in the spring. This summer, I didn't really play any games at all. But last week I bought Silent Hill 4. I started it and finished it on sunday and now I am going back to the first Silent Hill and doing the whole series all over again on hard mode. I can also assure you that once MGS3 is out I'll be playing the living hell out of it.
I'm a closet hardcore gamer, no one I know will ever assume that I play video games on a regular basis..sad eh? But I LOOOVE video games and I LOOOVE to master them. Its seriously fucked up my life though, I think I have to change my habits..

Try busting out your GBA SP in the middle of a class of over stressed pre-med/pharm/nursing students. You get a couple of nasty stares...
Yeps, it's exam time. Nah, I'm not worried
But anyway, yeah, I think anyone should've expected Square-Enix to pull some junk like this off, especially after FFX-2. I'm willing to give this game a shot though... heck, I'd be willing to try that other game they're making for cellphones (if I can get it free anyway... who pays for cellphone games?).

Its pretty much the same for me too, I just go through these "phases", apart from the perrenials(SSBM, Cake SC2), I just tent to play whatever takes my fancy, recently though it's mainly been Disgaea, and FFTA when I'm on the bus.dem wrote:I tend to drift in and out of being "hardcore". Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
Well, I'm interested in this game, but I'm concerned about the fact the Square often sucks when they branch out into other genres. Let's hope they can replicate the excellent gameplay of DMC with an FFVII feel.
No really, what I think, is that hardcore gamers are not how they play the game, it's just that they show an interest in any games more than the average joe, which might just use brand names, box arts, and occasional mouth-to-ear recommendations to choose what games they play.
Hardcore gamers, IMO, have higher interests than just playing the games, they somehow care about it, and are infinitely more vocal and cautious about them. Like us!
That being said, that doesn't mean a non-hardcore gamer cannot go through hardcore phazes on certain games (like dem said, though I am not insinuating he isn't a hardcore gamer)... But that touches specific games, as opposed to the gaming hobbie, so I don't really agree with that take on the definition.

I was one of the few people in this group to say that I was going to take a wait-and-see approach to FFX2. I completely realized that it was a cash-in based solely on sex sells, but the game didn't look like trash and what do you know, it turned out to be a fun game.
Therefore, I'll take the same approach to this game. I've never been a FFVII fanboy by any means, but even if I were, I'm not sure why that would get automatic backlash or love from me. If it's a good game, I'll give it a shot, if not, I'll forget it even exists.
There's a lot of hypocrisy in decrying people who will love this game just because it's got FFVII attached when you hate it for the exact same reason.

don't # me
Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
I loved FFX-2, but I can't take the same approach to this because it's not an RPG. I'm not much of an action gamer, so this is quite disappointing to me.
Well it may or may not be a good game, but I'm against the principle behind what SE is doing. That said, I'm not going to announce a Pepsi challenge here because I'm perfectly willing to acknowledge it as a good game if it turns out to be so. I'm not even claiming it to be a stain on FF. I merely wished for SE to have gone and worked on other things, things that I personally would find more exciting and long overdue.
This is what happens when Square Enix picks up bishounen fangirls off the streets of Tokyo for their focus groups. The "dark sexy gothic vampire with a tragic past"-thing is done to death - do we really need this when we can play Devil May Cry or watch Angel instead?
I agree with Garbo; I might've cared if it was an RPG.

But this is going to be about his dark future!!!!!!11
Seriously though, its pretty obvious that SE just isn't putting forward the same effort these days. FFXI almost made its self - it just contains every possible concept from every past FF game from characters, jobs, items, and mashes it all together in a MMORPG system and puts a story around it. FFXII re-uses Ivalice and a lot of the things from it. Add to that all of the FFVII spin-off games, and FF:AC.
Where the hell is the new content? I'm not seeing any...

Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
Actually, I think the fact that this looks like a fast-paced action game is evidence that SE is trying something very new and putting effort into expanding beyond being strictly a RPG maker with a few extraneous ventures into other genres.
The way I'm viewing this game (and much of the other spin-off type releases from SE) is as an entry into a new genre using items from well-established franchies in the SE archives.
This is not something new for the videogame industry in the least--is there even a genre in existance that doesn't have a Mario game of some sort? When a company wants to venture into a new genre, it often puts familiar characters and story into them in order to establish a selling base, and if the game takes off, it is a sign that the company can stretch its wings and try out new things in the same genre.
FFXI was SE's first venture into MMORPGs and used an endless number of things from previous FF games to support its sale, but after its success, SE is proceeding with releasing other MMORPG type games.
I can appreciate the desire for off-beat RPGs like those that were more common in Square's past, but I don't see it as a bad thing if they are able to make quality games in other genres.

Yeah but they can't rely on Final Fantasy all the time is the point. And concentrating on Final Fantasy and more FF, and more Fainaru Fantashi isn't going to help Square evolve as a company whatsoever.
That's the point. They should try to evolve past rpgs without having to put FF in the picture but alas, that seems to be all they care about (hell I would too I worked there because of all the moolah).
I agree on the expanding to new horizons and genres Rekki, but they don't have to always make it Final fucking Fantasy related all the damn time. That's the point. If they made a karaoke game I wouldn't mind, but how much you wanna bet they'd make it a Final Fantasy Karaoke? I bet fans would still buy that.

I think they probably would, especially if it were a good game.
I can't come up with another SE franchise that has even close to as large a fan-base as Final Fantasy. I suppose Dragon Quest has a fan base, but it's much more popular in Japan than it is in America, so they're far safer using Final Fantasy.
While it may bother you personally that they're using the FF franchise in this way, I don't think the backlash from people like you will even make a dent in the profits from people who will blindly buy it for the exact reason you'll boycott it.
Also, if it is a good game, most of you will probably go out and get it, so that gives SE some incentive to make a quality title out of it.
That said, I think you're entitled to be bitter about it because it seems like SE is cheapening a formerly prestigious franchise. However, I learned long ago that putting some kind of ethereal value on a videogame franchise is just asking for it, so I, for one, don't really care what they slap the FF name on, as long as once every few years I get a damn good RPG out of it.

So what's next? Star Ocean : The Adventures of Dias?
Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
After all of these FFVII spin-offs, I really don't want to see a remake. I don't want to see a FFVIII remake either.
Re: FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus (PS2)
That's what I've been saying. By the time they DO release a remake (like perhaps at ps3's launch?), I wouldn't care because I would have been tired of all the spin offs years ago, resulting in me not giving a damn.Redlimit wrote:After all of these FFVII spin-offs, I really don't want to see a remake.
