Final Fantasy to Streetfighter, Suikoden to Katamari Damacy, use this forum to talk about *GASP* videogames! The latest releases, your favourites, or ask for help.
- 50% complete
- Characters are 3d
- Backgrounds 2d
- Traditional rpg it looks like
- You tap the touch screen, making battles move at a fast pace
- The main headline of the article is "The Chosen 108 heroes have been destroyed?!" so maybe this game will be different from other Suikoden games in that regard?
- Only 4 party members in battle? Support characters return.
- New race. Looks to be a race of lizards.
Characters
The main character has no name, but apparently will be voiced by Takashi Hiroshi. It is unknown if this will just be in 'grunts' a la Lazlo and Freyjadour in Suikoden IV and V or like Kyril in Suikoden Tactics.
A shark race may be introduced into the series if one of the images has been interpreted correctly. All together now; grrrroan!
Gameplay
The gameplay takes advantage of the Nintendo DS's touch screen. The top screen shows character status information. HP, MP, status effects and the like. Meanwhile, you can use the DS stylus to enter commands in battle on the touch screen.
Other observations include: The battle system appears to be a four person battle system, like Suikoden IV. As such, it is a traditional RPG, not a strategy RPG like Suikoden Tactics.
Looking at the status screen it appears traditional Suikoden MP is OUT, to be replaced with standard MP numbers comparable to HP. Like in Final Fantasy VII, for example (and 90% of every RPG ever).
The character art and designs in general don't look nearly up to series standards but I don't really mind because they're not bad either. Still a drastic change in quality. I can tell they've hired a new character designer.
On the other hand...the backgrounds are gorgeous. Holy crap.
Apparently the game begins with the 108 heroes engaged in their final battle with the villain, and all the heroes being taken down except for four. This game's hero is not one of them, and his quest involves reassembling the 108, as opposed to discovering them.

Maybe I am weird, but the first 20 or so hours of Suiko V kept sending me to sleep
One of the characters looks like Flik but it says he is called Roberto.
I like the fact they are doing something new (recollecting the 108 stars) but why do it on the DS?
I would like some info on where it's gonna be based / and when in relation to the other games.
The main hero looks like a twat.
and Suikoden V was pretty good. It was just let down by horrible loading times and the fact that the villains weren't very interesting.....minus Sialeeds.....sort of.

HOLY SHIT.
Eh... sounds kind of lame. It's different for Suikoden, but it's not all that original when you think about it. I don't know. I think this might be another Suikoden IV or Tactics. Well, we'll see.
I think Tactics had better gameplay than Suikoden IV, but an even worse story if you can imagine. Suikoden IV's story was cliche and more importantly just lacking in substance. Suikoden Tactics story was ridiculous and nonsensical though. It would have been better if it weren't tied to Suikoden because it's very existence seemed to pervert and totally fcuk up the Suikoden mythology. It wouldn't have been a good story in any case but it was made all the worse in that it just sort of seemed to clash with the world set up by all the other games in the series.

Don't worry about it. HKK's gonna love the game before he plays it and hate it afterwards.
Chances of being disappointed are slim to none. Ward am dumb dumb.
FFXII sucks because it sucks. Everyone thought it'd be a good game due to the trailers and shit. Oh well.
Chances of HKK hating any 40-45 games he plays annually, 5%. HKK isn't like Ward, who appears to hate every thing but overrated, dumbed down games, which he hearts.
Worst game I've played all year is The World Ends With You. What a shit pile.

If you're counting only the numbered games, I agree. If you're saying that Tactics wasn't bad, I can't understand where you're coming from. I can understand liking the gameplay, but the story was just so damn terrible.
Here's the thing though. Junko Kawano wrote both Suikoden IV and Rhapsodia.
So long as she stays the fuck away from the series I'm not worried in the least. The good thing is that she just finished her game Time Hollow for the ds. So chances are, she was too busy with that to work on the new Suikoden OR Suikoden VI (which I know exists, unless it was cancelled).

See, I'm mocking you because it's a behaviour that you exhibit multiple times a year. Yet the only way you can reply my comments is by slamming on my subjectivity with your own.
Played about an hour of this. Doesn't seem half as bad as I'd imagined.
To me, it seems like any other [google]Suikoden[/google] tbh.
Only gripes are with the stupidly fast voice acting, and the fact that they went against Suikoden I/II style graphics in favour of blocky 3D.
Guess time will tell if the story holds up.
To be honest, being set in a parallel world doesn't bother me, if it means they get to do something with the story that they wouldn't have been able to otherwise.
Who's to say that a future Suikoden title won't link it all together.
I'll give it a chance.
I couldn't get into [google]Pokemon Platinum[/google], so have gone back to this to attempt to play it through.
For a DS RPG, I really can't find any flaws at all in it.
Suikoden with no loading times between battles: loving it!
Other problems:
- No Escape Talisman. Too many instances after quests where they LEAVE YOU TO WALK ALL THE WAY BACK OUT OF THE DUNGEON.
- Compounded by: no Let Go or Champion's Rune equivalent. Closest thing is a support member with the ability to instantly kill an enemy party of lower level (like in V) but often I just don't want to be bothered with scrub encounters.
