Re: Gaming Acheivements?
Quistis needs a really high magic stat for her limit breaks to even do any sort of decent damage :{

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
A lot of her limits do damage relative to low HP. Examples are Gatling Gun, and Homing Laser.
Problem is, you cannot get either of those before this point in the game. Well thats not 100% true, I could use Mug to steal a Running Fire (for Gatling Gun) from one of the enemies in FH, but that would require junctioning a GF, and since this is a no-junction game....
Bascially what it has come down to is either getting lucky enough that he hits Rinoa/Quistis with 6 consecutive attacks, or leveling up to like 80 and just whomping his ass with my superior speed. Note that leveling up that high will take around 15 hours or more in FH (where I am stuck).

Are you allowed to use abilities? Because I'm pretty sure you can card mod a SAM08G card for 30 running fires or something absurd like that.Redlimit wrote:A lot of her limits do damage relative to low HP. Examples are Gatling Gun, and Homing Laser.

EDIT: Wait, you're fighting the second Iron Clad in FH? Well you don't HAVE to mug the SAM08Gs in FH, they drop them as well.
Re: Gaming Acheivements?
All GF junctioning is forbidden. Since you would have to junction Siren to get AP to learn Card Mod, you can't use it. On top of that, you can't even Draw Siren from Evirolet in the first place (you don't have a Draw command
).
Yeah I just looked it up and Running Fire is a rare drop from them, but as it turns out...
I figured out that it is better to go into battle with Squall in single digit HP. Even with the chance he dies early, he usually causes more damage this way, and I have the off chance that the tank attacks Rinoa and Quistis for a while for more Renzokuken fun.
I tried it like this about 3 or 4 times, Squall taking early deaths in each. I was pretty mad at this point, and was going to try once more before leveling up a bit. The tank goes first before I can even move, critical hit on Rinoa, she is dead. Squall gets in a 8 hit Renzokuken. Quistis gets ready to hit it with a regular physical attack - she never gets the chance. Eats a Beam Cannon.
At this point I'm ready to just turn the power off, but I'm so mad that I just want to get in some more Renzokukens just to see how far I can get.
I wish I had a video tape in the VCR. The tank stood completely still for 7 whole turns, and Squall just beat the living shit out of it with 6/7/8 hit Renzokukens, all with a finisher move. Its like it just gave up or something. I had seen it not take any action for 3 turns before (its a slow boss), but 7?
You should have heard the commotion I made when I saw it start to blow up.
Anyway, I'm free to do as I please for a bit, got Odin, and now I'm in the process of upgrading weapons as high as I can.

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
You broke the game! The only special type of run I've done in FF8 was the no levels until early disc 3 when you can take full advantage of the xxx Bonus abilities. Now off to class. >.>
That no-XP FFVI challenge sounds crazy
I've heard of another (less difficult, I think) FFVI challenge : "natural magic game" or something... Every spell should be learned naturally (through levelling up for Terra or Celes, or getting hit by a monster's spell for Strago), basically no one should ever equip an Esper (or any item that teaches you a spell)
I haven't tried it, but sounds interesting.
Concerning FFVIII, the no-junctioning rule sounds a bit too harsh, but I think I should apply a no-drawing rule of some sort next time I replay the game. First time I played, I had so many of every spells that the game was actually way too easy for most parts.
I'm not really into challenges, but sometimes I think it's quite fun to add new rules to the games I play, like the "you shall never buy anything" greedy rule, or the "you shall never, ever spend anything (be it money or items)" ultra-greedy rule, combined with the "gotta catch all the precious stuff (every chest, item, piece of equipement... + special ability, hidden character, collectible card, or whatever)" treasure-hunting rule... (hum, yeah, basically, I love them collectibles
)
Another fun rule might be : "I will never use that character (let him/her die !)" or "I will use no-one but that character (let the others die !
)"
Another rule (that doesn't really make games that much more challenging, but rather better balanced) is the "equal character growth" one : all the characters should always be at the same level (+/- 1), which means you always have the weakest characters in your party, and must try not using too often your (usually over-powered) main character.
But I'm not really into time-attack challenges

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
Well, not all games lend themselves to speed runs that well. There are a few games from that website that I don't really consider very speedy, like the 1 hour 43 minute Resident Evil Remake run. I watched the video, and yeah its fast, but I mean its 1 hour and 43 minutes. Same with RPG's - a 20 hour game just dosen't sound 'fast'.
Funny little story here...I'm getting items to upgrade weapons right now, and I was farming Dynamo Stones and Sharp Spikes from enemies in the forests near Edea's House. I had what I needed so I headed back to the Garden when BAM, Ruby Dragon fight! I completely forgot that you can fight them in this area. I was scrambling to run away but he nailed me with Breath.
I had to re-farm all of those Stones and Spikes.
I'm saving after every battle now.

Try and finish Pikmin with a minimal number of casualties and leave behinds. Or gather all 30 ship parts in under 20 days. I am currently striving for 50 casualties and 0 leave behinds- alas I have no bragging rights yet.
Re: Gaming Acheivements?
Beating the Laguna Seca portion of the last license test in GT2. (Was it S class? It's been so long.)
That fucking corkscrew. You couldn't fly into it because the crap car they give you will spin out on the first curve or fishtail too much to come out clean. Nor could you crawl through the curves because you still had to beat the time limit for that test (which pretty much meant you couldn't slow down at all).
I nearly put my controller through the screen after hearing that dumb failing music and waiting for what seemed to be obscenely long load times just to retry the same test.
Edit>> Gran Turismo 2. I was also lookup up GTA: San Andreas screens when I was typing this, so it was a subliminal substitution.

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
Oh man...I had totally forgotten about the GT games and the S-Class liscences.
The Gran Turismo seriers are the only racers I like, and you are quite correct, the S-Classes are living hells. I know exactly what test you are talking about - you get some huge back heavy car (its a grey car I beleive, one of the imports) and you have to make about 8 progressive turns, each tighter than the last, and you have a time limit. The first few corners aren't too bad, but it quickly gets worse.
I imagine it took me over 100 retries to finish that.

He meant "Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec".
At least, I think that is what he meant. The shortform was GT3A I beleive, back in the day...

I believe I got an S-class license in GT3 after a whole month of trying.

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
I swear the hardest one for me to win was the Audi TT cup. You and the other 5 racers all have the EXACT same car, and no modifications are allowed. This means you have to perfectly out-drive 5 pro level CPU's in a series of 6 races.
Well as far as FFVIII goes, I'm starting to think that it may in fact be just as hard as the FFVI No Level game...it wasn't very difficult at first, but it is quickly spiraling into insanity. The second Iron Clad fight in FH was only the beginning.
The next major boss was Raijin and Fujiin in Balamb. I finished getting all of the upgrades I wanted, and got the items for as many of Quistis' Limits as I could. I fight Raijin, and even though its a close call, Quistis + Micro Missile and Zell + Duel win out. Here is where the problem starts. Squall is dead, and Quistis and Zell are in yellow HP. No biggie, right? The battle is over, after all. Problem is, as soon as the battle is over, Zell runs into the Hotel and you are drawn into the battle with both of them right away, no chance to use the Item screen.
Now this is a major problem, especially since Fujiin likes to cast Tornado for 800 damage to everyone and Zell and Quistis are already at less than 500 HP. I lose in about 5 seconds.
I did this about 5 times, and I declared it un-winnable by current standards. I was thinking about strategies involving other party members when I started going over all of Quistis' limits. Having Bad Breath would be an amazing boon vs Fujiin and Raijin, but the Esthar continent is not available at this point in the game.
Of course, that is just what I remembered. I flew the Garden around all of the Esthar continent, and saw the Chocobo Forest at the top of it (the hidden one). You can get there from Trabia on a Chocobo...but I couldn't remember if Malboros are there or not.
Lucky for me, they are.
Picked up Bad Breath (and some extra tentacles for a future Save The Queen), and went back to Balamb. Raijin is no longer a problem, as he has 0% defence vs Sleep. So that means I can go into the 2nd battle in much better shape. Raijin dosen't Sleep in the 2nd one, but he does get Blinded (he still seems to hit 50% of his attacks though), and Fujiin is RAPE as she gets no status at all, and continues to beat your ass unhindered.
Basically you have to pull off a very fast kill on her. It took quite a few tries, but she went down and Raijin missed a few attacks, leaving him open to a 12 second Duel of ultimate destruction.
This is really starting to get hectic.
I don't even want to think about what the final battle will be like, with its multi-tier setup and no healing whatsoever. Assuming I even get that far...

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
Luck has nothing to do with it.
Situation A
Odin comes down from the heavens and slices him up some Malboro.
Situation B
Odin dosen't come, and Quistis' timer is mostly full so you can get off a Degenerator (she is in pre-yellow HP).
Situation C
Odin dosent' come, and Quistis' timer isn't full enough to use a Degenerator in time. You run from the battle.
Situation D
Running from the battle fails, and you die.
90% of the time either A or B occurs though, so it only took about 10 minutes to get 20 tentacles.

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
Ok lets see which games I've done what in
FFI - took a Nintendo Power challenge and managed to beat the game with 4 white wizards. took months to do and so much levelling it hurt. you spend so many weeks just levelilng because whm can't deal any real dmg until you get the spell items that let you cast dmg spells for free. of course the game got very easy in the final dungeon once you get he masamune, but still it is a damn-near impossible trial.
FF:MQ - took another Nintendo Power challenge and tried to beat the game in 4:10. I only tried twice and the closest I got was 4:30, close enough
FFVI - never bothered with the no level up thing because that is just unecessary stress. It's almost like sayind "beat tetris without clearing lines!" I did, however, beat that game in under 10 hours, which i must say is a feat in itself. oh vargas(you will always be vargas to me!), try to beat the magi-master without life3. conditions = no stats-raising, no espers.
FFT - bent this game over in so many ways it's not even funny. Of course gone through the "get every single item in the game," which all includes stripping Elmdor of all his Genji equipment, subduing Elmdor and the assassins on the rooftop and pilfering them, all hidden items in the Worker 8 battle, Koga and Iga knives, and the "get the ninjas to throw me excaliburs and ragnaroks till i have 99 of each" trick. I think my greatest accomplishment in this game, however, is when I beat the whole game after Mandalia Plains with just Ramza. Monk/Squre with move +3, blade grasp, and two swords and only mantles equipped. Very tough, but very rewarding.
FFVII - did the no materia thing, wasn't as fun, just frustrating. even without materia, lv 99 is just a cakewalk. not going to even bother with no levelling beacuse in the weeks it would take to do that, i could've played several other games
FFVIII - this is embarassing for me because this was the only FF game i ever played without knowing anything. i played through the entire game without knowing how to summon or junction, yes that's fucking right, i didn't know how to junction. i also went through all the discs not knowing you could even upgrade your weapons until the last part. the only weapon upgrading i was able to do was squall's 2nd sword
i managed to beat the game with squall/irvine/rinoa. took well over 80 hours, but i did it and only after realizing how stupid it was. i guess beating it like that was an accomplishment in itself
Earthbound - Got Gutsy Bat on my first kraken
(guess that is just luck not really accomplishment)
Secret of Mana - got all Lv 9 weapons and all unique armor + griffon helm
Star Ocean 2 - beat Indalecio-Celeste(limiter = OFF) WITHOUT angel armbands and bunny shoes. this one i'm damn proud of
I used to be big on "mastering" games back in the day, but my edge has dulled over the years. My main concern in gaming nowadays relied on just getting through it while enjoying the atmosphere/characters/scenery/music/nostalgia
The hardcore "omg beat everything under the hardest most rediculous conditions possible" thing seems fun, just not worth the time. i'm sure i've done other notable things in games before, but i'll have to think real hard

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
I defeated the Magi Master in my no level game. It takes about an hour, but you Rasp and Osmose all of his MP away. When he dies and tries to cast Ultima, he just says "Need MP" and dies. I suppose you could just stand there and let him run out of MP on his own, but that would take substantally longer...
The main reason I'm doing FFVIII No Junction at the moment is to mostly kill time until HL2 comes out. I needed something that would eat a lot of my free time. My desire to play that game is incredible.

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
I'm praying that Bad Breath still wrecks them over, but I'm pretty sure they are both immune to status attacks at that point.
Re: Gaming Acheivements?
The Garden War went as expected, and Seifer went down first try. He really is a lame fight, his attacks do next to no damage and you can whittle his HP down with regular attacks until you get into yellow HP, then kill him in 2 or 3 limit breaks.
Edea on the other hand presents a probelm, because at the start of the fight, you are hit with the unavoidable Maelstrom which causes Curse (unable to use limit breaks). Obviously in a No Junction game THIS IS A PRETTY BIG FREAKING PROBLEM. The only way to hit her with a limit break is to have the final hit on Seifer be at the same time you have another limit break (or two) queued up, because limit breaks take effect before all other battle actions, be they friend or foe. So, Seifer dies, and the other two members get to use one limit break each, then its down to regular hits.
Edea is succeptable to gravity (praise the lord
), so Micro Missiles and Meteor Strike in Zell's Duel do considerable damage to her. For the life of me I couldn't get more than a 4 second timer with Zell despite trying like 10 times, so I just worked out a way to squeeze in 2 Meteor Strikes into a 4 second Duel (you can do it, but just barely). This lets you kill her if you get off 10 physical attacks before she kills you, and she is very good at killing.
She can sometimes cast a non fatal spell like Slow, Reflect, or Silence though, so you pray she does at least one or two of those.
I eventually got her, and was on to disc 3. Abandon was a problem at first only because I forgot physical attacks can't hurt him, but Fire Breath does 9999 damage to him every time. Two of those and he gives up.
I'm currently stuck in the final Laguna flashback when you reach Esthar. The 1 on 1 fight you have with a guard isn't too bad, but the 3 on 3 battle is pretty freaking tough. They all have over 9000 HP, one of them can cast Death, the other uses Degenerator, and the third one just beats your ass old school style with 1000 damage punches. There is about 10 minutes of walking/talking every time you retry this fight too thanks to no save point close by.

I like this one. When I first played FFT, in japanese, I didn't realise we had others characters during the first few battles. So I did the beginning only with Ramza and Delita, and it was fun!Trevelyan wrote: I think my greatest accomplishment in this game, however, is when I beat the whole game after Mandalia Plains with just Ramza. Monk/Squre with move +3, blade grasp, and two swords and only mantles equipped. Very tough, but very rewarding.
But since I'm not such a big nub
And I'm amazed at the way you played FFVIII
LOL, yeah, I remember when I started playing FFT with only Ramza and Delita too
It also took me a while to realize that the % of chance to hit your opponent (as well as the resulting amount of damages) was displayed under the character's stats, when pre-selecting an attack
. Could have avoided a lot of "miss" from my archers, had I known this sooner...
Concerning FFVIII difficulty, this no-junctioning challenge reminds me : I always found the boss ridiculously easy, considering how often they would not be immune (like any truly self-respecting boss should be) against simple status attack such as blind, silence, and so on...

Hmmm...damn, I don't have terribly many, but I got a few....
Beating Wizards and Warriors with no continues whatsoever, ending with 999,999 score
Beating RE1 in about 1.5 hours with Chris
Perfect games of a few FFs
Finishing Ninja Gaiden rather fast on one life
Actually beating Ghosts 'n Goblins all the way through
Damn, not as hardcore as I thought.
I usually go for a lot of 'perfect' games rather than speed or wierd achievements. Like finding all shit in an RPG, maxing out, etc. Prolly forgetting a couple achievements in there. I think...I did the Tactics bit of getting everything, found everything in many FFs, like I said...
Yanno, one interesting FF1 challenge is always the all Black Belt party. Sure they can deal tons of damage, but what I learned from those guys is that they are soft on the defence, and with no healing except for potions, and no bringing back to life, some of those bosses can be a nightmare. You gotta hope that you kill them before they kill you basically.
ANY boss with RUB or XXXX is a fucking pain in the ass.
Oh, I did beat Warmech
And Ozma without getting all the friendly monsters. But that's been done a few times, no biggie there.
I do enjoy the 'named' challenges like was mentioned, like 'no buying items' 'only this character' and so on. I wanna try FF1 with 'only one fighter'
And I mean NO one else int he party.

Beating Ghosts 'n Goblins is pretty hardcore. Being able to do it consistently would be insane.

I haven't played the original, but I own Super Ghouls and Ghosts so I can attest to it being a complete bitch.
One question: When you get the 'fairy ring' do you have it equipped in the second to last boss fight before the final room? I could never beat those two bosses with the damn ring, so I gave up (meaning I have yet to beat the game).
I beat Mega Man 1, that was a bitch.

I used to break my controllers trying to beat the Mario speed recordElFenrir13 wrote:Oh fuck yeah. Did Super Ghouls n Ghosts as well on the hard setting. But Ghosts n Goblins is fackin' HARD. I can only consistently maybe make it to stage 3 or 4 or so. I dunno how I did it but I think it took all day long and about two broken controllers![]()

Basically, without the Fairy Ring or whatnot, you can't beat it properly. You need the ring, and you need to beat it with said ring. But to tell you the truth, I did this back in like 1993 so I can't remember WHEN you needed it, but from what I remember you got it BEFORE the boss rooms...One question: When you get the 'fairy ring' do you have it equipped in the second to last boss fight before the final room? Kinda like in Ghosts n Goblins, to really beat it, you need to beat Lucifer with the Cross weapon, in all of its shitty ranged glory.
About world records: I actually beat the score for the world record in the Guiness Book for Mario Bros. Yes, the original Mario Bros. I was a kid at the time, and there was no one there to judge me, so some fake posuer is still in the book with the high score.
Re: Gaming Acheivements?
Red, how the hell do you survive attacks that hit the whole group with no exp in FFVI? It just seems impossible. I mean...you'd still have 200-some odd HP when 1000+ area attacks are coming at you, long before Life 3s are an option.
I admire anyone who can go through any of the aforementioned 'challenges'. This shit's too hardcore for me. Most NES games are too fucking hardcore for me without introducing new 'challenges'.
And yes, finishing Xenogears counts.

Re: Gaming Acheivements?
For FFVI, you just need the right equips backed up by the right strategies. There are a lot of things in the game that don't to damage proportional to your level/stats. Edgar's Tools and Sabins Blitz will always do massive damage to anything, even if you are level 7. Bum Rush becomes a staple move in any battle you fight regular style as it still does over 5000 damage for free.
Equipment is the big one though. You need to get at least one character over 128% MBlock ASAP. You won't get enough equipment to do so in the WoB, but very soon into the WoR you can outfit up to two characters this way. This makes it so that 99.9% of all attacks, both physical and magical, miss you completely. Ultima, Flare Star, critical hits....it all just says "Miss" and you dodge it. The only thing this dosen't protect against is instant death moves (stone/Blaster/Doom/Calmness/etc), and sometimes you will get hit with a stray attack that should have said "Miss", but that rarely ever happens. The odd AOE boss attack will go through this as well, but I think there are only 1 or 2 bosses that are like that.
People have done No Level games without abusing the 128% MBlock thing, but it takes such a huge ammount of time that I would never try it. You would have to get insanely lucky to win a lot of boss battles this way, and the ammout of tries you would have to do to get everything correct would make me sick. It is still plenty hard with the 128% MBlock, beleive me. Everything in Kefkas tower (well the bosses anyway) laugh at your MBlock and rape you anyway.
All of the 'tricky' bosses (read: ones that MBlock won't save your ass) can be worked around with strategies. Like I told Trev, Magi Master can't cast Ultima if he has no MP. Dirt Dragon can't hurt you if you are all wearing Gaia Gear. Sometimes the strategy is just simply "beat the living shit out of them and win before they use the attack that will kill you".
As for FFVIII - I am now aboard the Ragnarok in space. The Laguna flashback was tough, but Desperado owns all.
After that, you actually don't fight any bosses or anything for a long time. The hardest battle you have is if you randomly run into a Malboro in Esthar, and low HP Quistis takes care of that assuming Odin does not.
The aliens in the Ragnarok....well this could be tricky. They only have enough HP to live through about 10 Renzokuken hits (so thats 2 Renzokukens on average), but lord they get turns fast and hit hard. Rinoa is useless in these fights as she dies in one hit, or if the game feels nice and she lives with like 50 HP, she CAN'T USE ANGELO LIMITS IN SPACE, and Angel Wing with no magic stocked is about as useful as Berserk without the STR increase.
I think that Zanetsuken can kill them though, so if worst comes to worst, I'll just keep resetting until Odin smites them all in a swordly rage. Yeah its cheap, but so are these fucking aliens that get 4 turns when I get one, and deal 1500 damage hits.

What I am wondering is how much fun you are gonna have in Ulty's castle. I mean granted a lot of your abilities are locked ANYWAY...better unlock those limit breaks quick
Ulty's castle might not be that hard though, cos you don't have to WORRY about unlocking shit after the limits...
I take it you are going to pass on the the Deep Sea Research Facility?
And yanno, if I were doin this I'd prolly be using Squall, Zell, and a mix of Quistis or Selphie. I'd be trying to abuse 'The End' to no end. Then again Degenerator does the same, just not to ANYTHING.
