Interesting article. I'm too lazy to quote the best bits but basically it's all about how Sony will lose tons of money in the next few years because they're nubs who don't understand no one will buy their console if they don't have enough exclusive good games. I so hope it happens, Wii and 360 get's for me plz.
And now, just the comedy quote as this is supposed to be a Square-fags site: (ya rly )
"We don't want the PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them," Michihiro Sasaki, senior vice president of Square Enix, told the Wall Street Journal. "But we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much."
"Our ideal," Kutaragi said, "is for consumers to think to themselves, 'OK, I'll work more hours and buy it.' We want people to feel that they want it, no matter what."
O_o;;
I wish there was a site referencing the best/worst quotes from Sony officials, they never cease to horrify/amuse me (and make any tentative trolling on Sony totally redundant)
Going down the gutter, digging their own grave... That's the impression Sony's been giving me for a while. Seems to me they've played chicken race with Microsoft, but went a bit over the edge... Or at least took a very risky gamble. Maybe it will pay in the long run, who knows? If they can survive till then...
Seriously, their arrogance is staggering. Do they think because they've been on top, they're invincible? The example of N64 era Nintendo should be enough to make them think twice.
But purchasing a PS3 this year could be the very thing that pushes Sony over the edge.
I don't get it. Cuz each console sold is a loss on Sony's part, which leads to shareholders being worried?
For example, selling off the movie division would result in the loss of the Spiderman franchise for the PlayStation. Without an exclusive there, Microsoft and Nintendo would gain the edge in game sales, since their games cost less than Sony's.
I don't get this either. Why does losing the Spiderman franchise for the PS3 have to do with Microsoft gaining an edge in games sales?

This part is clearly stupid as is the part where he ramps up the price to 1000 by including games. No one's going to buy a 600 dollar game machine and not buy games for it, regardless of how expensive they may be. You would certainly want enough games to at least get up to 1000 if you were willing to spend 600 on PS3. Anyway, Sony has produced a certain number of machines so I don't see how they can lose out on ANY purchase of a machine with or without games (this does not make a requirement of buying two games a poor business decision, that simply selects who's getting the consoles).
I don't think it was stupid, as much as it was poorly written. It was pretty biased, but basically what the guy was trying to say is, thanks to the loss that is incurred with the sale of each PS3, if you wanna do your part to save Sony, then you better spend around 1000 dollars on peripherals and games etc.
Realistically, hardly anyone is going to buy 6 bluray movies along with 2 games and the console.
I think your point is a bit ridiculous, I really doubt a lot of people are going to spend up to 1000 dollars on their initial purchase.
Maybe not initially, but I think they would have to be idiots to feel it's worth it to throw 600 dollars on a machine if there aren't a number of games they want right away, not just a couple. If they really think a couple of games are worth 700+ dollars(I consider the console by itself valueless and can't see how anyone else could feel differently), I think they are idiots without an idea in the world of the value of money. If you really aren't planning on spending something close to 1000 in the near future, why the hell aren't you waiting for a price drop? That's my point, because 6 or 7 games for 1000 sounds a lot better than 2 for 700.
Not as much as you fuck yourself over. Yes, if you only ever buy 3 games I suppose Sony would take a loss on that. However, I doubt it's crucial to Sony that they immediately make up losses on the console. I don't think they would be that stupid. Maybe some game buying is needed to reduce the hit, but not everyone buying several games. However, if the instant gratification of 3 games at launch is worth the price of the console plus games to you, I think you're fucking retarded.
Garbo, losing the Spiderman franchise = Spiderman potentially being released on Wii and XBox 360 => people will be more likely to purchase these cheaper versions as they will be at least just as good as the PS3 versions anyway = MS (and Nintendo) gaining an edge in games sales.
At least that's how I understand it
As for the other quote, I don't really get it either, because surely unsold PS3s would be worse than selling everything? I suppose Sony just has to be careful and not put too many or too few PS3s on the market at launch as a poor estimation of sales would mean wasting money on production costs (too many PS3s manufactured = paying the maximum price for each components and too few = paying even more for them once they have to speed up the production process. Oooh the fun of [google]JIT[/google] )
Previously Spiderman was released on multiple consoles anyway wasn't it? I know there wasn't a price difference then, but as I recall, Spiderman wasn't a franchise that gamers hurried out to buy. At least, videogames wise, Spiderman doesn't turn any tides at all.
ZOMGZ! I'm anxiously anticipated Spiderman: The Movie: The Game 3!!!1111 Is there any news. Some screenshots plz I'll be wating in line at release day, who want to camp out with me?
I suppose Spiderman was only one example of the movie franchises Sony would lose? I never buy this kind of games so I wouldn't know But I guess some people do buy them
But yeah, if his argument is based only on Spiderman it is completely retarded indeed

I should have said "Hypothetically speaking: ... ", didn't I

According to the representative, due to the overheating and technical problems they had earlier this week (which had seen a drop in stocks), Sony may have to delay the Playstation 3 console itself in North America. Sony on the other hand denied that there are any problems with the Playstation 3. We’ll find out soon enough as this would be a huge blow to Sony if they had to delay as Nintendo would have a huge headstart in the console wars.

Right now the ps3 craze has already started. The ps3 fanboys are as idiotic as ever, and seem to lack common sense. It is like the ps2 all over again with its OMGSZ T3h EMOTIONA ENGINE AND PARALAXX PROCESSORS! In reality the Cell is better made for computational activities and other appliances, I think the 360 IMO is a more EFFICIENT gaming machine, AND easier to program for. The ps3 has more raw computational power but that doesn't matter too much. There are some GPU's that have about 300mhz on other GPU's (in PC market) and the lower MHZ ones win because of more efficient architecture and pipelines. Just like the ps2, the ps3 is limited in ram, and its Branch prediction sucks. The 360 has the same total ram but its unified, making it easier for devs to distribute. Also people say that the 360 has 3 cores and thats it while the SPE's have 7. But the 360's cores have 2 threads each.
I can't believe people go out there and plunk $600 for another reptitive Final Fantasy game, and MGS4 which is more than a year away, Its not that i mind, its just that it reminds me of ps2 too much, and that Sony is so arrogant that they KNOW people will buy it REGARDLESS. If people had better reasons to buy it, it wouldn't bother me so much Blu-ray isn't even needed for games yet.
You know, even if the PS3 doesn't have those overheating problems at launch, it WILL have another problem. Since only ALL of Sony's consoles/game machines have had problems with the first and sometimes second generations.
Of course saying it like that isn't exactly correct either. But the point is that most likely the PS3 will have issues with the first generation. Since that's not garunteed though you can't account it to Sony's demise... yet.
Xbox360 however seems to have all it's kinks worked out, at least I haven't heard of any recent issues with them.
Nintendo never has issues with the hardware. Not that I've read anyway, all their hardware works the way it's supposed to.
Anyone who wasn't a fanboy, or who was at least smart enough to take these things into consideration still wouldn't get a PS3 at launch. They'd more likely get a Wii at launch and maybe an Xbox360 for christmas since if there was going to be a price drop on it, it'd be during the christmas season, rather than risk an expensive PS3.
Haha I can't even imagine how heavy the PS3 is tbh, must be like Xbox+Xbox360 or something
Anyway, I can still remember how pissed off I was when our first gen PS1 died like one or two months after we got it... Sure it was still under warranty but yeah, best fucking christmas present ever And I can't imagine Sony getting it right the first time with this one either, seeing all the fanboys crying in the next few months is gonna be funny
Gamecubes seem pretty hard-wearing.
I have had several disc read errors though (mainly on Skies of Arcadia, so it might be certain games) and the sytem randomly rebooting itself >:|
My 360 acted funky for 2 days and it magically fixed itself (which leads me to think it was the hard drive, not the rest of the hardware, as the HD was acting wonky). I took it out, cleaned the connectors, plugged it back in, and it never happened since.
My brother, however, had to send his 360 back.
It was my first launch console (hardware revisions excluded), and I somewhat regret it. I mean, it's not that I dislike the 360, it's just that I could've definitely waited.
Btw Ward, I decided to keep my 360 as I want Viva Pinata, and that's out very soon (which surprises me as by default when I see a Rare game announced, I don't expect it until at least the next generation ).
Mine's only a core system though so I need a hard drive, but can't afford the £70 they're asking for one D:
Are there any tips, or places that cheapo ones can be purchased?
Nintendo hardware is quite incredible, actually, durability-wise.
I've seen a pretty crazy video on YouTube or something, where a gamecube gets dragged behind car, bumping all over the road, getting scratched beyong recognition... then just loads games perfectly O_o
Also, in the NY city nintendo store, there is that gameboy that supposedly got burnt down in an explosion during Gulf War 1 (the plastic looks all melted), and still plays Tetris just fine O_o²
Dunno if any of these are fakes or what, but I must say despite occasional bugs, no nintendo hardware ever died on me.
People used to write to Nentendo Magzines telling them stuff like "I dropped my GB ino the deep end of a swimming pool, and when we finally got it back it was still working, turned on, and the game had paused the moment it hit the water"
I read one about a GB Color that was left out in the yard for two weeks, during which it was rained on and runover by a lawnmower (presumebly more than once) and still worked when it was found.
Hmmm....well, my old NES has had trouble loading games for years. Maybe even before the SNES came out. It still works though. Just need to keep oushing the game in and out until it starts up.
Hm, NES start-up problems are often said to be related to dust inside the cartridge
All of my old Nintendo systems normally still work, but the SNES plays sounds weird
On a given track, the low channel (such as rythm and stuff) plays loud while the loud channel (main melody) plays low
True. Traditional methods of getting it to work involve blowing in the cartridge, but also blowing inside the console and rapidlypushing the cart down and up in the system the way that only works for the old NES, not the newer version that has cartrideges inserted like the SNES.

no fucking clue. the best way to make the HD not a ripoff is to get it in the premium package.

Well you can't expect Nintendo to be able to make everything as durable as the older, less complicated products. I mean as we all know the nicer something is, the more fragile it is. At least that's been my experience. So as Nintendo try's to make it's products more asthetically pleasing with newer/better technology, durability is going to suffer.
Yeah, DS Lite are a bit of a disgrace, sturdiness wise
But seems you can have Nintendo replace your hardware pretty easily for free if it gets broken
I've heard of many stories of people having dead pixel on their DS, who just went back to the shop and got a new one for free for instance.
I sure would give it a try if I ended with defective nintendo hardware. Their customer service is supposed to be quite good.
