The two parts I had trouble getting past were the beginning when Mr. Tanaka took Chiyo(Sayuri) and her sister to that fortune teller who did "bad things" to them. And then at the end when Sayuri planned to piss off Nobu by sleeping with the Minister. Which seriously made me feel bad for Nobu. I mean, even after she took that General as her danna he still helped her.
I also felt that the story slowed after Hatsumomo went crazy... She was such a great antagonist....
The entire story had this very realistic feel... especially if you read the "Translator's Notes" which confused me a bit until I read the Acknowledgements at the end. Though I knew it wasn't a true story, especially when Sayuri talks about how drunk she was when she went to retrieve the piece of concrete for Nobu but was able to recount the evening perfectly.
Anyway, now that I've read the book I'm planning on renting the movie to see how that is. I'm sure there are those of you who would say not to bother because it's not as good as the book, but why bother listening to you? (the people who would say not to bother) Just because "it's not as good as the book" doesn't mean it's not good.
