I was always under the impression (have never had any exposure to tHGttG) that it was a Star Trek reference. A Trill (e.g., Jadzia Dax) has a symbiont inside, so it's two beings, one body. The adjective for someone from Trill is Trillian. The program in question has many chat clients in one program. Thus, my conclusion that it was a Star Trek reference.
