Idk. But what I do know is that the only game I finished is FFXVI and the GOTY it not FFXVI because it’s bad.

I do find it curious how the general opinion I've seen of FFXVI has very much pivoted from positive to negative. I really enjoyed it, but am very aware of its flaws and respect most of the criticism it's received.

Here's my list!

Overall GOTY:
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Hands-down better than BotW. Thought the fusing/building mechanic would be annoying, but it's actually great fun. I took a break from Zelda to play through FFXVI and then went straight back into it and played it to the end. Despite it being my most played game of the year, I feel if I went for 100% I'd much more than double my playtime.

RPG:
Final Fantasy XVI

Sports/racing:
F-Zero 99

Family game:
Never really understood this category that pops up everywhere but I guess Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Fighting game:
Street Fighter 6

Independent game:
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (very close to being GOTY)

Strategy game:
Fire Emblem Engage

Mobile game:
Hello Kitty: Island Adventure

Action/platform:
Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Rhythm:
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line

Puzzle game:
Suika Game (came out internationally recently)

Ongoing game:
Forgot my answer for this. Didn't play FFXIV at all this year though.

Multiplayer game:
The Jackbox Party Pack 10

DLC:
Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed

Remake:
Super Mario RPG

Remaster/Port:
Metroid Prime Remastered

Stranding game:
Hello Kitty: Island Adventure

Game studio:
Sabotage Studio for Sea of Stars, which just missed out on a lot of these categories

Art direction:
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

Narrative:
Final Fantasy XVI

Soundtrack:
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

Game I played for the first time this year which was from another year:
Cult of the Lamb

Think the only new game I played any of was Sea of Stars, so I guess it wins all categories! Congrats to this Quebec game!

Overall GOTY - FFXVI for being an actual new game anyway. In a lot of ways my actual GOTY was FF Pixel Remasters,if you could even count that as one game, which idk about or FF6 pixel remaster if you can't.
RPG - Same
Sports/racing - N/A
Family game - N/A
Fighting game -N/A
Independent game - did I play one? I can't recall
Strategy game - N/A
Mobile game - N/A
Action/platform- N/A
Rhythm- N/A
Puzzle game- N/A
Ongoing game -N/A
Multiplayer game -N/A
Remake
Remaster/Port - FF Pixel Remasters
DLC -Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores
Stranding game - N/A not sure
Game studio - Square, I guess
Art direction - Idk
Narrative - FFXVI
Soundtrack -FFXVI was decent, I guess.

Bonus:
Game you played for the first time this year that was from another year - Lost Judgment, I think

List to be uodated as I play more games from 2G23, if I remember.

I’d consider the Pixel Remasters had they not originally been released in 2G21 and 2G22.

Released for PC doesn't count as far as I'm concerned. If it's not released in a medium I play until a certain year, I consider it fair game for the year in which it is released for consoles, which was 2G23.

I started playing games on PC more recently. Should that change my logic? Only time will tell

Probably should but like I didn't play too many games from last year. Maybe not any? I'm in the middle of Clair Obscur though.

I’ll make the threads at some point. Even if I’m the only person that actually uses them :p
