2G19 - 2: Getting Old

Post by WaWard »

So it is fair to say that we’re all adults now. And likely, we’ve all peaked and have started our slow descent to being old.
I feel like I peaked in 2G13 and now it’s going downhill.

Since then I’ve progressively started:
- balding
- getting hair in places I do not want hair
- back hurts all the time
- losing sex drive
- sagging

I also don’t feel like:
- going to parties
- not being home during weekday evenings
- doing anything not useful for me really

Its not all bad doe:
- people seem to look up to me now
- but on the flip side I am finally escaping the caring what people think about me trap
- I can afford some luxuries like a $1G phone
- my friends circle has gotten smaller but stronger

How do you you cope, old gamers?

I started balding in my early 20s, but yeah, I have a lot of various getting older type symptoms that seemed to start in my 30s and get progressively worse.throughout them.

Never cared for parties and such so that hasn't changed much.

I also find I struggle with my age more when I’m at a prime number. 36 wasn’t much of a deal for me and neither was 30, but 31 and 37 - yyyyeeeeah feeling it!

31 is the end of the denial that you aren’t an adult.
37 you’re in the deep end of it and the end is so far away :boo

I don’t look very different from a distance than I did when I was in my like mid-20s, but the skin’s a little looser when you look up close, and the hair while plentiful is not quite as majestically thick as it once was. Not grey yet, but I welcome that change. Just hope I keep most of the hair.

My typical weight is probably about 20 lbs heavier than it was back then, but it’s a reasonable weight still. But we’ll see how that progresses towards 40 I guess!

I feel sadder and angrier about a lot of things now, but that comes in large part from (a) reading the news a lot more, and (b) struggling in recent years to unlock that armoured vault labelled “emotions”.

I have a lot more opinions about parenting than I used to, despite not being one. But I was parented at one time, in a manner of speaking.

I barely play video games anymore. I haven’t watched anime really since the early 2Gs. I play guitar now.

I don’t have many friends (at least in my vicinity) these days. That makes me a little bummed, because I also find it hard to make friends as a grown-up. :sadlove

I was never very good at making friends to begin with. I failed at step 1: talk to new people. So I don't have that many friends to begin with and they're basically all college or earlier who don't live in the same area anymore. Was pretty cool when one of my friends from college moved back to the dc area a few years back, but he moved back to Florida like a year ago.

See, I don't feel like I'm currently ageing at the same rate as other people. I'm not noticeably balding/wrinkling, have no noticeable aches and pains, very little grey hair, and people that don't already know my age still assume that I'm a decade or more younger than I actually am (one guy at work last week actually had his mouth agape for a good minute when I told him and repeated it to me in disbelief 3 times... as I told him I'd turn 40 in 2 years).

I have a more regular bedtime now (11/12pm on weekdays, later at weekends, especially if something is going on) and consider/value my sleep a lot more than I did around 2G5-10. I still don't get enough sleep though, but I'm rarely tired and exhausted from it, so in that way, I'm lucky!
One noticeable getting old thing is that I now almost always wake up in the night needing a piss. Sleeping in a bedroom with an ensuite makes that becoming a habit pretty easy.

Of all my friends, I'm still the main social organiser and the reliable constant that can be expected to turn up to parties and events and bring others/new people into the fray. Moving to Manchester hasn't changed that. I still see most of my London friends as often or more often than they see one-another. I do, however, frequently feel regret that I've made plans. cancelling going to the cinema with my wife after work is a regular thing. Time seems to be compressing the older I get, and there just doesn't seem to be enough time for that, videogames and some of the other stuff I seemed to have ample time for in the past.

I've always had inconsistent social anxiety and that hasn't gone away with age. If anything, it's gotten worse. I'm a lot more aware of it, anyway. I worry about meeting new people and increasingly second guess and doubt myself. Some friends say I don't seem to give this impression, which I guess is good. It's a constant mental barrier though.

While I'm aware that I AM older and am displaying some of the tendencies that go with that, I don't think I'm ageing at the standard pace. I know people a decade or more younger than me that look and act older, appear a lot more together and are generally more grumpy and jaded than myself. No idea if that will all change when I hit 40, but this will be a good thread to look back on and giggle at in 10 years time.

I'm definitely ageing though. Over the last 8 years, people's post common guess of my age has gone from 22/23 to 26/27.

People in my team at work were talking about how somebody in another team is turning 30 next year and they were all "CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW OLD HE IS". That's when the subject got on to how old we all are (as we have a new temp who didn't know anybody's age) and I dropped the bombshell after everybody speculated on my age. I fully believe that the guy turning 30 is 30 next year btw :p

The RDM is unsure if he's balding or not. Which almost certainly means he's balding and trying to convince himself he is not. He has some forehead wrinkles that are kind of aggressive, too.

Aches and pains are actually better now than they've been in years. It turns out once the RDM started getting exercise on a regular basis everything started hurting less. Weird.

Battel is big enough to wear some of her mother's clothes, though. So that makes the RDM feel pretty old.

Probably. Kids definitely make you seem more like an adult. But, at the same time, they're a pretty good excuse to play video games and legos and junk, which is cool.

That's crazy. Lego is the brand. Legos is a reasonable shorthand name for the blocks. Calling the blocks as a collective Lego just sounds awkward and weird and wrong.

That’s because Americans are used to saying it wrong. I only found out that people called Lego “Legos” when I started reading shit on the internet. It grates on me the same way as when people used to say “playing Nintendo” and shit like that.

There's nothing terribly wrong about saying "playing Nintendo," despite being vague and generic, unless you're actually playing on a non-Nintendo console. Even at that, I would still probably only use the phrase to refer specifically to the NES, but whatever.

I don't think it's cross-generational. People who call all video games "Nintendo" are people who never or hardly ever played games at all and didn't have enough interest to recognize that Nintendo was just one of several companies in the industry.

No, seriously, it’s super weird. I never heard it probably till I was an adult. It literally sounds as weird to me as if someone referred to grass as “grasses”. Like “I’m going to go cut the grasses”. And referred to a blade of grass as “a grass”.

It seems that literally the entire world apart from America know the score. Check out the comments of any popular social media post by Lego for versions of this argument though. With the spike in popularity of Lego, America is slowly being educated.

Oh right, back on the original post.

No kids as of yet for me. Just hanging out with other people's kids when socializing with friends. Still get my bomberman fix here and there.

As I've gotten older... I think got less eager to please. Little less caring of other people's judgments. Subsequently, socialization and conversations are easier. Weekday outings are not terribly appreciated, but still seem to happen a lot. Probably more socializing now but more with useful acquaintances rather than close friends.

When I'm setting out to do something I've remained consistently stubborn about seeing it through. Flip side, when I'm setting out not to do something I've gotten just as stubborn about not doing it.

These days most of the focus is on building business, running business, and accumulating currency. Side gigs here and there to alleviate pent up hobby-itis. Like ward said, nice to be able to afford things now. But I find its now just wanting more expensive things. There's always something out of budget that you strive for.

Physical side not terribly different. Got a patch of white hair that cropped up. Used to be the spot that one or two would sprout from. Lost some weight recently so apparently that turned back the clock a bit.
