But full disclaimer, I like really sweet stuff. I could give L (death note) a run for his money in a sugar eating contest.
There's also various sake that I've had that I really liked but I've never tracked down specific brands.
But in general I don't drink.

Everything is better than absinthe. Absinthe tastes like butt.
Last night, the RDM had Jealous Mary's. As far as complicated cocktails go, that one's right up there. Since you have to juice your own vegetables.

Craft beer these days. Mostly sours/lambic style.
Rum is my harder beverage of choice though these days I try not to drink too often. I'll have a couple on a weekend with someone or one with dinner now and then. Holiday dinners I can put away a few.
Which reminds me to pick out my sours this year for Thanksgiving.

I got high on alcohol with absinthe in Eastern Europe once. Good times.
I find that absinthe tastes ok. Wouldn't go out of my way to have some that said.
What I tend to drink varies. My go to is Canadian pinot noir, or craft IPAs.
From time to time I succumb to Scotch or bourbon.

I like to try all sorts of craft beers. There is a dépanneur near where I live that has a large back room that is nothing but beers from small Québec breweries. There are lots of other places with good selections around too, including the butcher nearby. I'll try whatever. They are often very good, and almost always at least decent.
The RDM drinks more red wine than anything else, and of that Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the winner. He has a very sophisticated system for choosing wine at the liquor store: avoid twist-tops and choose wines that actually talk about the wine on the label rather than telling some stupid, unrelated story.

I certainly drink enough beers to generally know what I'm getting into with one type or another, but that is not the case with wine. The best I can go by is "I know I've enjoyed merlot before" or whatever. But I never remember the flavour difference between merlot, cabernet sauvignon, etc., so I end up picking a bit arbitrarily, or based on vague descriptions on the bottle.
I didn't even remember posting in this thread the other night.
I don't dislike beer, but I find it too filling/bloaty and very hit-and-miss on the like-o-meter so I avoid it. Vancouver has an insane craft beer scene these days so there are lots of choices and I've stumbled upon a few specific things that I really like, but doubt I would find them in a liquor store ('cept maybe the Murphy's stout). I also am not enough of a beer lover to go out of my way to discover more that I would like, but do intend to slowly add to my list as I come across them.
Guy I've been out with loves his IPAs. Always orders IPAs and only IPAs. So predictable!
It's good to know what you like though. I'm really not a fan of hoppy things and generally dislike IPAs as a rule. But tasting his I've discovered that I love the upfront citrusy taste, just really hate the bitter aftertaste. I don't do bitter. This makes me very picky for both beer and coffee.
Likewise I don't like Guinness because it's too fuckin' bitter. But I have since discovered other stouts I like.
Next
I'll be having Murphy's instead.
Beers I Like:
Jerkface 9000 - crisp citrusy beer
Fuggles'n'Warlock some kinda chocolatey stout - delish
Murphy's stout - a creamy, non-bitter Guinness
and probably some fruity beers that don't taste like beer
Had Pabst blue ribbon at friend's place the other night - bit watery but I can see why it's a popular go-to. It goes down smoothly.

I tend to look more for notes. I avoid "oaky" wines as they're not really to my taste. For reds I like smooth, berry-infused varieties. For whites I like them light, crisp (citrus/apple/pear notes), and sweet. I like the idea of rosé but have never been overly impressed by them.
Of course, I select them mostly for drinking on their own rather than for drinking with particular foods. My brother has this sage wine (a white) that is AMAZING with a turkey dinner, but I wouldn't really sip it on it's own.
Funnily enough, I've only been on a wine tasting tour once since I was like 7.
Should really go up to the Okanagan to tour wineries sometime.

This is me too. My go-to is Bodacious Smooth Red, though all their reds are good, just slightly different fruity/berry accents for the most part. They're a BC wine and maybe about $12 a bottle so I'm happy with that. There also seem to be a fair amount of studies around the positive benefits of red wine so yay enabling rationalizations.RDM wrote:The RDM drinks more red wine than anything else, and of that Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the winner. I'm the same really. My go-to drink is wine (it makes me happy and tipsy) but even so I'm not a huge expert. I just know "I liked this. What type is it?" and keep it in mind for next time. TBH for a lot of the mainstream varieties (Merlot, Cabernets, etc) I find they vary so much from brand to brand that it sometimes almost doesn't matter. Merlots especially. I've had some divine ones (probably a Concha Y Toro from Chile) but some are just flat and bodyless and "taste like ink" as my mother would say.smeared ink wrote:I certainly drink enough beers to generally know what I'm getting into with one type or another, but that is not the case with wine. Prosecco can be good. Free samples can be found. The RDM thinks there are weird laws about it.
The best thing is when you go the the liquor store and a bunch of vendors have booths set up there. They're all like "Try all this free booze!"
Sometimes there's free pasta, too. Which doesn't even make sense. Pasta samples at a liquor store must sell zero pasta.

Never underestimate the power of a beer tasting either when it comes to getting rekt during tastings. Some of those craft beers start to crawl pretty high on the alcohol percentage, and once you've had the umpteenth tasting glass pass by you do find yourself in various states of inebriation.
These days I don't drink so often-my hangovers past thirty got unbearable and nearing 40 they just about put me out, so now I usually grab a few now and again. Usually on Thanksgiving I get a nice buzz going by the end of the night.

I never actually got hangovers until recently.
Today I went to a shop to buy three beers and was asked my age. I was so shocked, I hesitated before saying "35...". The woman serving then laughed, as did the other people in the queue. I guess I can still pass as being 17? My liver knows the truth though
