For Black Mage even if the attack rating is higher without weapons, if s/he's in back like s/he should be then it won't make a difference. Personally I equip my Black Mage with a bow and arrows in the other hand so she can still do decent damage from the back row when she's not using spells.

Hey. When I set classes to my dudes for the first time, for example my black mage, he can equip a rod, but he's much weaker with the rod than without it. Y4! :ono

That's not true. They originally released it as III back in the day though they changed some things to make it easier, then it wsa rereleased as VI on Anthology, and THEN it was released on the GBA. :o
